Dec 4, 2018 47:55

Description:

I am BACK in action here at Well + Weird HQ. After what seemed like the longest month on the planet, I'm back, sharing a bit about why I've been away. Spoiler alert: I'm gonna have a baby. And life's been weird for a bit. In this episode, I'm sharing how I've  been feeling, and how I've been supporting myself through all the change that has already begun.

In this episode we talk about how self care often has to shift, and it's OK that it looks different than it once might've. We talk about the changing body, and learning to be OK with that, the things that have been helpful so far through this process, and what you can expect going forward with this podcast + in working with me in a coaching capacity.

58. On Why You Should Not be Trying to Resist Your Carb Cravings

Oct 29, 2018 52:01

Description:

We’re back for another media literacy episode, where we dive deep into a recent piece of media as it related to body acceptance, eating disorder recovery, and health (from a HAES perspective. This week we are digging into an article entitled “10 Simple Ways To Stop Craving Carbs All The Time,” sources from Mind Body Green.

If you’ve been a long-time listener, you can already guess how many problems I have with an article like this, just based on the title alone. But if you’re not sure why the idea of trying to resist or ignore our carb cravings (or our cravings in general) is problematic then you’ll definitely want to make sure to tune in!

I know I talk a lot about carbs and why they’re so gosh darn important, so this may not be totally new info if you’ve been listening for a while. But it may serve as a much needed refresher, given that we’re headed into the holidays (traditionally a very body-politically-charged time of year) AND with all of the low-carb rhetoric floating around the internet these days.

I hope you enjoy!

56. The truth about self care, and why it's so damn important through eating disorder recovery

Oct 8, 2018 46:43

Description:

We’re back with another solo episode! The first of the season, where I’m sharing some of my most crucial beliefs about self care through the recovery process.

I truly believe that one of the most crucial, foundational parts of sustainable recovery is self care. But not just the bubble bath, self-pampering kind of self care (that’s all great, but…) I’m talking self care that is about tuning in to your needs, being with yourself for long enough to know how you need to be supported, and tapping into your senses in order to come back to the present moment.

This may seem a little abstract right now, but I promise the episode goes in deep about all of this and more, and will leave you feeling ready to put some energy back into yourself, in the most gentle of ways.

54. Everything You Know About Obesity Is Wrong - an audio version of this very important article by HuffPost

Sep 21, 2018 58:57

Description:

This week we have another installment of my solo series where we hash through a recent article on 'health', wellness, dieting, food and disordered eating, and discuss the actual facts behind the bold claims being made in these spaces.

But this week is a little bit different. Rather than tearing through this week’s article, fact checking and debunking, I’m actually just sharing a very important, much needed piece published by Huffington Post. I wouldn’t normally share something in this way, but I think that just speaks to HOW vital this information is, and I couldn’t have written it better myself.

This piece, written by Michael Hobbes addresses the very real marginalization that fat people face every single day of their lives, in addition to much of the misinformation we have about obesity.

+BONUS+ episode: an interview with tween girls about bodies

Aug 17, 2018 20:35

Description:

This summer I was offered the chance to be a part of GEMS, a local summer camp for girls excelling in math and science. The camp was an opportunity for girls, grades four through seven, to explore their interest and skills in STEAM fields (science, technology, engineering, arts and math). And because of two local teachers’ awareness around how messages about having to ‘fix’ or change our bodies, so deeply impacts our ability to critically engage and excel in these STEAM areas, they asked us at Ophelia’s Place to kick off the camp with messages of body acceptance.

Instead of letting our young people’s minds wander to all the ways they wish they looked different, we need to be encouraging them to explore all the amazing things their bodies do for them, and allow them to do. I decided to interview the girls to get them thinking more critically about just that. And I hope this interview helps you to do the same.

43. "Why are we so obsessed with making healthy desserts?"- my thoughts on a recent article by Healthyish

Apr 29, 2018 55:11

Description:

In this solo episode, we're digging into some of the problematic points raised by a recent article from Healthyish- a blog geared toward foodies and wellness seekers.

The article tries to address some of the problems with moralizing food, trying to make everything we eat "healthy," and how diet foods really just end up leaving us unsatisfied. But in my opinion, it really misses the bar and could do a whole lot better to revolutionize the wellness movement to make it more inclusive.

Jan 2, 2018 32:59

Description:

In the final podcast of 2017, we dig into why your new years resolutions don't work, how shifting towards setting value and spirit-aligned intentions does, and how intuition and intention go hand in hand to keep your self care game strong.

New years holds a lot of power for us to create change with. And holds even more power as it is the year of the high priestess- a year for using our intuitions, honoring intentions, and surrendering to the ease, slow and flow instead of stacking to-do's and shoulds on our already full plates. This episode will help you reframe your mindset around the new year and motivate you to get dreamy & intentional for what you want in 2018.

28. The practice that will change your body image [solo episode]

Oct 5, 2017 53:41

Description:

Intuitive eating sounds great, right? But to actually make the leap and fully abandon dieting, well that's the hard part. But in this week's episode Holly explains the exact practice that sparked her to once and for all make peace with her body and let go of the food obsession.

This practice helped Holly let go of counting calories, carbs, macros and allowed her to eat what felt and sounded good moment to moment. It helped her stop binge eating, and enabled her to step out of the diet cycle for good.

If you're stuck in the diet cycle this ep. could change the game.

24. On healthism: what it is & why we need to question our pursuit of health

Sep 1, 2017 41:27

Description:

In this month's solo episode, Holly is talking about how healthism is yet another way our culture has found to 'other,' oppress and stigmatize fatness. We talk about why health isn't something you morally need to work towards, and how this pursuit is harming more people than it is doing good.

At the end of the day I want you to start questioning your own reasons for pursuing health and wellness, and ask yourself whether or not it's something you really want to spend your time and energy on. And if it IS, get clear about why. I also want you to start to be way more conscious about the "health" and weight messages you're putting out into the universe, so that we can stop this perpetuation of unrealistic beauty, health and body standards.

She has been recognized by millions across social media for her message: anybody can practice yoga and everybody has a right to be their true self no matter what body they are in.
