Unusual Options Activity: Alibaba Group (BABA)

Nov 8, 2019

Description:

The June 2020 $205 call options on Alibaba Group (BABA) saw over 5,200 contracts trade, a 7-fold surge in volume. The trader is betting that shares, currently around $187, will rally about 9.6 percent higher in the next 224 days—a solid bet if some of the trade war truce headlines prove true this time. Based on the price paid by the trader of $12 per contract, they’ll make a profit if shares are at least $217 come expiration. With shares trading only as high as $196 in the past year, it’s a bet not just on a further rally, but on shares making it to new highs.

Insider Trading Reports: Chesapeake Energy (CHK)

Nov 8, 2019

Description:

The CEO of Chesapeake Energy (CHK), Robert Meyer, made a 50,000 share buy after the company reported poor earnings in the third quarter and the insider trading lockout period for the shares expired. That increased his holdings by 1 percent. He was joined by director Brad Martin, who bought 250,000 shares as well—a 24 percent increase in the director’s stake. Insider data shows that other insiders have been bullish this year, and one major fund holder made a big sale. Shares of the natural gas producer slid nearly 30 percent after reporting earnings, as the company warned that the low prices of natural gas were unsustainable for the industry—as well as the company. The firm even raised the prospect of remaining a going concern, which accelerated the selloff.

Why You Must Experience Online Stock Trading At Least Once In Your Lifetime

Nov 8, 2019

Description:

The world is constantly changing, and how we interact has changed in so many ways in the past few years we don’t fully think about it. For instance, traditional telephone landlines are dying out as most communications are now made on mobile devices. Sure, we’re still using phones to talk, but they can do so much more. Likewise, how we invest our money has also changed, with many investors switching to online trading. There are plenty of reasons for this shift, given the benefits of online trading. As long as you know the basics of what a stock is and how to find a stock ticker, you can enter an order and make a trade in a few clicks.

Unusual Options Activity: Uber (UBER)

Nov 7, 2019

Description:

March 2020 $25 call options on Uber (UBER) saw over 2,500 contracts trade, a 13-fold increase in volume from the previous open interest of 192. With shares around $26.50, the option is about $1.50 in-the-money, and should move dollar-for-dollar higher with shares in the next 134 days before expiration, less the time premium. The buying comes after the company reported good earnings—but that it also burned through substantial cash—sending shares to post-IPO lows. An in-the-money bet is more expensive than out-of-the-money, but it also is a conservative options trade that already has some value to it, and is likely to retain that value. There’s still a lot of leverage too: Should shares go to their old high of $47, the $35 option would be worth $12, nearly triple the current price.

Insider Trading Reports: Universal Insurance Holdings (UVE)

Nov 7, 2019

Description:

Stephen Donaghy, CEO of Universal Insurance Holdings (UVE) recently picked up 5,000 shares after the company reported earnings, shelling out over $137,000 to do so. He was joined by director Sean Downes, who has made multiple buys of around 10,000 shares so far this month, totaling over $300,000. A look at insider buying shows a series of sales when shares topped $40 back in 2018, followed up by lesser sales as the price declined. .Now insiders are only buying as shares appear to be heading up again, a sign that insiders know when shares are both undervalued and overvalued, and when to make swing trades for big profits.

The Top Reasons Why Online Stock Trading Is Common In the USA

Nov 7, 2019

Description:

Online investing is popular—and still growing. With a number of brokerage firms slashing their costs to zero, it’s easy to see why it continues to grab market share from traditional brokerage firms. In the United States in particular, there are a number of reasons why trading stocks online is so popular, and so common. First, online stock trading is based off of technology—and American culture embraces technological development faster than the rest of the world. The United States developed the internet out of ARPANET, the Advanced Research Projects Agency Netwrok, largely as a military project. However, the developers used the same tools to create a way of communicating digitally, and the commercial aspects led to the gradual creation of the Internet.

Insider Trading Reports: FedEx Corp. (FDX)

Nov 6, 2019

Description:

Director John Edwardson made a 10,000 share buy at FedEx (FDX), paying just over $154,000. This is the second insider buy since September, and insider data over the past two years shows many insider sales at higher prices, with some insider buys stepping up in the past year as shares have lagged. With shares of the global shipping company still down 25 percent in the past year, widely under-performing the market, the step up in insider buying looks attractive. Fears of a slowdown in global trade—which reflect the reality of a slowdown in global trade—have been weighing on shares. But even with the slowdown, trade isn’t going away, and at 12 times forward earnings, this global giant appears to be near an attractive entry point.

Three Stocks Company Insiders Can’t Get Enough Of

Nov 6, 2019

Description:

Insider investing is a great tool. It can cut through a lot of the market noise, and get down to the brass tacks of investing: Where can a profit be made? After all, corporate insiders, like a CEO, CFO, and others, have a lot of knowledge about a company, far more than what’s disclosed in quarterly earnings reports. When they buy their own shares, it’s for one reason only: Shares are undervalued and likely to move higher. Of course, the market may take time to catch up to the opinion of these insiders. That’s why astute insiders keep adding to their stake as the market remains out of favor. We’ve found three companies where insiders have been coming back time and again in the past year to buy shares.

Unusual Options Activity: JP Morgan Chase (JPM)

Nov 6, 2019

Description:

June 2020 $160 call options on JP Morgan Chase (JPM) saw heavy trading, with over 1,400 contracts trading against a prior open interest of 100. The bet, with shares at $130, is for a $30 rise in the next 226 days—or a 12.3 percent jump in price. That’s certainly achievable, given reports that the big bank readjusted its portfolio out of $130 billion in cash and into bonds. The bank also reduced loans on its balance sheet, to free up capital requirements to buy back more shares and up the dividend. Those moves typically help boost the share price of a stock.

How Warren Buffett’s Value Strategy Has Adapted to Changing Times

Nov 6, 2019

Description:

The investment world throws out a lot of numbers—and anyone just getting started with investing may find it overwhelming. But like any other activity, it simply has its own language. When it comes to the numbers that get thrown out, understanding just a few of the simplest concepts can go a long way towards building up a track record of trading success.Trading Tips’ Andrew Packer will get you started with making profitable trades.

Unusual Options Activity: JD.Com (JD)

Nov 1, 2019

Description:

Over 6,050 contracts traded on a November 15th, 2019 $30.50 put option on JD.com (JD). That’s a 17-fold surge in volume against the prior open interest of 354 contracts. The option has 14 days left before expiration, and shares of JD are at $31.24, so they’d still need to drop for the option to close in-the-money. Adding in the $0.80 option premium, and traders are betting on a drop under $30. The Chinese e-commerce giant often has some swings up and down, and may have just started a short-term pullback based on the latest charts. If that’s the case, then the trade, while short-term, could possibly provide a trader with a 25-50 percent return in the next few weeks—not too bad for an options trade.

Two Ways Baseball Can Show You How to Improve Your Investment Process

Nov 1, 2019

Description:

Investing can be a lot like a game of baseball. There are moments of incredible excitement, often interspersed between many calm, even boring moments. Over an investment lifetime, a trader can amass a great highlight reel of their best trades. But, while baseball fans see it this way, professional players actually out there on the field see it differently. For them, it’s their job. And as such, most players have a process that they follow to ensure their success. Investors would be wise to learn to think the same way. By turning a series of seemingly-unrelated trades and investments into part of a broader process, you can make mistakes, but learn how to minimize them in the future, and set yourself up for the trades that have the best prospect of making you money. Let’s look at each in turn.

Insider Activity: Tile Shop Holdings (TTS)

Nov 1, 2019

Description:

Peter Kamin, a director and major holder with over 10 percent of shares in Tile Shop Holdings (TTS), recently bought another 426,295 shares. This increased his stake by over 7.7 percent, and came to a total just over $750,000. Insiders have been net buyers in the past year, largely by Karmin and another director that also has a stake over 10 percent. All told, insiders own just under 80 percent of shares. Tile Shop Holdings, a retail outlet for natural stone and man-made tiles with over 141 stores in 31 states, has seen shares decline by nearly 80 percent in the past year. That level of drop is far in excess of the company’s operational performance, which has shown a mere 4 percent revenue decline in the past year.

The Three Most Important Numbers Traders Need to Understand

Oct 31, 2019

Description:

The investment world throws out a lot of numbers—and anyone just getting started with investing may find it overwhelming. But like any other activity, it simply has its own language. When it comes to the numbers that get thrown out, understanding just a few of the simplest concepts can go a long way towards building up a track record of trading success.Trading Tips’ Andrew Packer will get you started with making profitable trades.

Unusual Options Activity: Marathon Oil (MRO)

Oct 31, 2019

Description:

Over 4,000 contracts traded on the April 17th, 2020 $10 put options on Marathon Oil (MRO). The option had a prior open interest of just 175 trades, making for a 23-fold rise in volume on the option. With a current price around $11.50, shares would need to drop 15 percent for the option trade to move in-the-money. For a company in the energy space, that kind of move in six months is easily achievable. The option currently trades for around $0.66 or $66 per contract, the option would need to be at $9.40 or lower for the put buyer to profit at expiration. As the the company’s 52-week low is near $11, this would mark a significant move down in shares.

Three Commodity Trends To Play Now

Oct 31, 2019

Description:

Commodities—goods as diverse as oil, timber, silver, nickel, and corn, among dozens of others—have been a quiet place to trade lately. With most investors looking at a stock market near all-time highs, commodities may provide investors with some different ways to make money. Even better, looking at commodity trends, investors can find stocks capable of moving up or down more rapidly than traditional companies. We’ve identified three different commodities going through different trends, all where investors can profit. Upward Commodity Trend: Natural Gas. This is a seasonal play on winter in North America and Europe. Natural gas demand spikes in the winter thanks to rising demand for the fuel for heating. Investors looking for a commodity trade can expect a market-beating move higher. Last year, natural gas prices spiked over 60 percent in total.

Insider Activity: Kinder Morgan Inc. (KMI)

Oct 31, 2019

Description:

Richard Kinder, the billionaire founder and Executive Chairman of Kinder Morgan (KMI), recently bought 300,000 shares. At a cost of just over $6 million, the buy only increases his stake by about 0.1 percent. Insider data for the company as a whole shows major regular buys from Kinder, but more mixed results from other executives, including a few sales in the past year. On total share count, however, insiders are buyers far more than sellers. Kinder Morgan is an energy infrastructure company with a focus on pipelines that transport oil and natural gas. Shares have beaten the S&P 500 Index by 5 points in the past year, and the company has returned to profitability after the slump in  energy prices led to a cut dividend.

Unusual Options Activity: Mastercard (MA)

Oct 30, 2019

Description:

The June 2020 $280 call options on Mastercard (MA), saw a surge in volume from 345 open contracts to over 4,000 trade. With shares around $277, the option is near-the-money, and could start moving dollar-for-dollar higher with shares between now and June if the company rallies. At a price of $21.10 per option, or $2,110 per contract, it’s not for every trader, but it’s far cheaper than the price of buying 100 shares and hoping for a move higher. Shares of the payment processing company have had a great run in the past year, nearly tripling the return of the S&P 500 in the same time. While shares sound conventionally expensive based on a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 30, the company’s fat 42 percent profit margins and double-digit revenue growth of 12 percent make this a surprising growth play in a large-cap package right now.

Three Plays on Real Estate for Income and Upside Potential

Oct 30, 2019

Description:

There are many investment opportunities out there. For where the markets are at right now, many investors are looking for defensive plays—places where they feel safe, and get some income along the way to offset any uncertainty. They’re mostly overlooking real estate, however, given lingering fears from the last recession over a decade ago. That’s too bad, because there are some great opportunities today, which can give investors above-average income compared to the average stock. That lingering fear in the market also means that there’s plenty of upside potential for many names in the space as well. This combination of high current income and capital gains, irrespective of what the stock market is doing, makes for an attractive opportunity right now.

Insider Activity: American Airlines (AAL)

Oct 30, 2019

Description:

James Albaugh, a director at American Airlines (AAL), bought an additional 10,000 shares, increasing his stake by over 38.8 percent to 36,091 shares. The total cost for this purchase cost just over $314,000. Aside from one small sale by a director in August, corporate insiders have been buyers of shares, with massive purchases in particular back in June at prices 5-10 percent lower than where shares trade right now. Insider data also shows that insiders tend to sell shares when prices are north of $40, about $10 or 33 percent higher than current prices near $30.

Recession-Proof Your Portfolio With These Three Stocks

Oct 23, 2019

Description:

But lenders aren’t being as risky as they were. Industrial profits are declining on uncertainties over tariffs and trade wars. But those issues can be resolved and go away just as quickly as they popped up.Whatever does happen, with so many indicators showing a slowing economy, it’s time to think defensive. But rather than give in to fear, consider recession-proof companies instead.Specifically, we’re looking for companies whose performance may not be exciting during a bull market, but, over the course of a bear market, are likely to trade flat at worst, or even rally as the economy resets.
