Discover ValuegraphicsFeb 27, 2019 27:17
Description:Are you looking for techniques and methodologies to further improve the effectiveness of your content marketing campaigns? This week's podcast guest may well rock your world and open your eyes. ( In a good way) After a successful career in marketing, developing ideas and concepts to engage stakeholders for several hundred organisations, David Allison recognised the need for a more scientific method to determine what influences a target audience. Like many of us, David realised that so many of the demographic and age-based stereotypes just don't work anymore. People of all ages are not conforming to traditionally held aged based groupings that so often are foundational to our marketing and campaign analysis. So David set about getting the data to explore what he was sensing but using big data. 'What We Value Determines What We Do' Working with a university-based social scientist for two years, David built the Valuegraphics Database. The whole process was guided by a fundamental principle of sociology, psychology and consumer behaviour: what we value determines what we do. The result is Valuegraphics, the first big data tool that gives organisations and industries the data they need to motivate a target audience using core human values, an approach the statistics have shown is as much as eight times more effective than using outdated demographic stereotypes. David shares with us how his model helps consultants, advisors, creative teams, marketers and brands use big data to inform their ideas and strategies. Armed with insights from the Valuegraphics database which David and his team continue to grow and expand, they identify the values that determine how people will behave in any given situation, and what will motivate them most. If you have ever been frustrated by the apparent weakness of traditional demographic and age profiling so commonly overused in marketing, we think Valuegraphics will provide you with a fresh alternative for analysing your customer and prospective customer data. Replacing guesswork and opinions with data; this is a methodology designed to help creative content marketers focus on making their best, most motivating work for the audiences that matter. If you want to find out more about Valuegraphics and how it can help you avoid basing your campaigns around outdated and inaccurate age-based stereotypes we highly recommend David's Book 'We Are All the Same Age Now: Valuegraphics, The End of Demographic Stereotypes'. Does Content Marketing Convert?Dec 14, 2018 31:07
Description:Earlier this year, Ciaran got to talk with Oli Gardner from Unbounce, a Leading conversion rate optimisation tool. We explored a little of what Unbounce does but mainly focus on an exciting experiment that Oli ran earlier this year on blog content. The aim of Oli's experiment was to see what effect writing a storm of regular content to promote key features their platform offered would have on conversions and the bottom line. The challenge... create content that drives both product awareness and conversion rates through the roof. Being a conversion rate optimisation specialist, Oli was confident he could ace this mission and significantly 'move the needle' of success. However, as you will hear, nothing quite panned out as he expected it to but some fascinating lessons were learned along the way. Join us this week as we explore Oli's story and delve into the key learnings and insights from one man's mission to embark on a veritable marathon of content for conversion. LinkedIn for Digital MarketingNov 29, 2018 22:24
Description:Daniel explores how digital marketers can make use of their own personal brand via LinkedIn profiles to full effect. Making your posts personal to you can make a massive difference in how others choose to interact with the content you share. Understanding Conversational AISep 21, 2018 46:08
Description:Powered by artificial intelligence, chatbots are cutting-edge software applications capable of having highly personalised and engaging conversations with your customers in messaging apps like Facebook Messenger, on voice platforms like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri, or directly on your website or app. It’s easy to be sceptical about AI and Chatbots and how they have been implemented in a lot of cases which leads to a rather disappointing experience. The explosion of build it yourself chatbots has put powerful tools in the hands of thousands of marketers, without really teaching them the grammar and best practice of good conversational design. So is chatbot AI really as flawed as our experiences of it to date? In a rapidly developing and emerging field, we all need to take a fresh look at what is actually already possible. We talk with Henry Burton from Artelligen who specialise in creating conversational experiences for a range of different use cases. Henry walks us through the business of conversational design and how it helps to develop strong engagement with Ai powered chatbots when designed and implemented properly. Chatbots offer one of the best ways to get in front of the millions of people using messaging apps like Facebook Messenger, Slack, Telegram and Skype. Henry and Daniel explore how to go about designing a relevant and engaging experience for your customers. Listen in and learn about best practice for generating engagement through the effective use of conversational AI and explore what the future of chatbot and voice computing potentially offers marketers. Custom Audiences and RetargetingSep 7, 2018 16:56
Description:Do you properly target your display ad campaigns or do you follow more of a carpet bombing strategy? As marketers, it's easy to get hooked on showing adverts repeatedly to get results and argue how effective this is with your results data. However, given how much aggressively retargeted Ad campaigns are disliked universally it is no wonder that consumers and audiences are fighting back with ad blocking software. Research has shown that 11% of users globally have ad blockers installed on their browsers but for younger audiences, we have found the number is more like 70% plus. Great advertising has always been about reaching the right audience receptive to your message. It’s not about throwing as much content out into the web to beat customers into submission. In this episode, we explore more effective retargeting. Daniel shares with us how to build better audiences and target your campaign more effectively. Done well, effective targeting can greatly reduce your ad spend and massively increase your advert success and engagement rates so what's not to love. Listen in and start making your campaigns more efficient, and more targeted and loved by your customers. Note: Since we recorded this episode Google as you may be aware updated their Adwords product name under the new name Google Ads. The Death Of Content MarketingJun 20, 2018 21:31
For some time now marketers have noticed that content marketing is getting harder.
Are you focussing enough on promoting the content you are producing or are you in a rush to burn through as much material as you can to get through that week or month? We explore how to make more of the content you are producing and how to track its impact more effectively.
Social sharing appears to be an activity in decline, and dark sharing is becoming more and more common. We discuss dark sharing and more shareable content and what it might help users say about themselves. Also under discussion - best practice for social sharing. Are you differentiating your content for different audiences or have you fallen into the trap of great social scheduling software that makes it easy to share the same posts multiple times on multiple platforms?
Daniel shares his views on the negative aspects of growth hacking techniques which all too often encourage marketers to think about what they can do to their audiences for personal gain rather than what they can do for their audiences to help and add value to that relationship.

Influencer MarketingMay 19, 2018 15:32
Daniel and Ciaran discuss influencer marketing, warts and all. Ciaran shares why he finds influencers such hard work and in many cases such a poor ROI on the effort that goes into recruiting them. (We know they aren't all bad but the bigger they are the harder they are to deal with in Ciaran's experience) In today's celebrity sceptical world, we think advocates are a far more genuine way to get the most out of what is traditionally termed 'Influencer marketing' You get to give genuine fans of your brand a really unique experience that they can share with their audiences.
We also share with you all the sad news that Klout is shutting the doors on its social scoring platform and discuss a few alternatives.

10 Myths of E-commerce- Part IIApr 17, 2018 14:44
In part 2 of this interview, Jon Woodall, founder of Space48 and I continue our discussion on 10 e-commerce myths. We explore the widely held belief that every e-commerce business can become an overnight success. We also discuss some common mobile website conversion myths and explore the strategy of shooting from the hip and not needing a plan. We also discuss how to identify if you are the problem your business is facing.
10 Myths of E-commerceApr 16, 2018 28:51
Ciaran speaks to Jon Woodall, founder of Space 48, an award-winning eCommerce consultancy & Magento Solutions partner for forward-thinking retailers. With years of experience in e-commerce, creating websites that have gone on to be global successes for the brands they have worked with, Jon Woodall brings a massive wealth of insight into what makes a successful E-commerce site.
Jon believes that many a CEO, Head of e-commerce, project manager, developer, designer or marketer of an e-commerce website often make the wrong decisions based on some commonly believed e-commerce myths. They are therefore not taking the right approach to solving the problems and challenges that they – and you - face. Ciaran explores 10 e-commerce myths that Jon’s years of experience have highlighted.
If you have ever worked within the e-commerce space, we think you will find these myths both entertaining and just possibly a little close to what is often mistakenly taken as gospel truth in some marketing circles.
Digital DarwinismApr 10, 2018 24:59
In this episode, Ciaran talks to Tom Goodwin, the Executive Vice President and Head of Innovation at Zenith Media USA about his new book Digital Darwinism which launched this month. Tom has been voted a top 10 voice in Marketing by LinkedIn, one of 30 people to follow on Twitter by Business Insider, and a "must follow" by Fast Company.
Ciaran and Tom explore some of the themes of his new book including what we can learn from the mistakes of shifting industries of the past when trying to prepare for the digital wave of disruption forever present on today's new digital and real-world horizons. We explore Self-disruption and what it might offer leading businesses prepared to take the risk to stay at the cutting edge of their industries, and also explore why senior leaders interests and the interests of the business may not be as aligned as many people think. How ready is your team for the challenges and opportunities that the rapidly changing world around you present and are you ready to invest in your business medium to long-term future or are you just playing at investment without really committing to it?
Faced with disruptive technologies, new consumer expectations, and the advent of digital-first super-companies, your business will be left behind unless you act now. Digital Darwinism is your wake-up call that incremental change is not enough: adding technology at the edges and wrapping it in “innovation” just won’t work. We live in a world where thin interface companies like Uber, Airbnb, Alibaba, Amazon, Spotify, and Facebook have achieved unprecedented growth by exploiting gaps in the market left by large legacy corporations. Digital Darwinism takes a deep dive into what business leaders can do to thrive in the modern age. Will you reject complacency and establish a new perspective on not only how to think about change—but how to actually do something about it? An industry provocateur and commentator on the future of marketing and business, Tom is a columnist for TechCrunch and Forbes and frequent contributor to The Guardian, GQ, Ad Age, Wired, Ad Week, Inc, MediaPost & Digiday. What Tom has to share will resonate with anyone thinking about the path their business should tread to not only stay current but to stay ahead.

#NotesToStrangers - An interview with Street Artist, Andy LeekMar 26, 2018 47:59
This week we have a much longer episode than usual. If you have ever travelled around central London, you may well have come across a unique brand of self-help street art created by artist Andy Leek and branded under the now famous Instagram hashtag #NotesToStrangers
Through his spontaneous street art, artist Andy Leek has grown a loyal following of over 82,000 followers on Instagram who document and photograph his work when they find it posted randomly around the capital.
Earlier this month, Ciaran met up and spoke with #notestostrangers artist Andy Leek and spoke to him about his work as an artist and how the whole project which has now become a full-time job came about and took off. ( Since we recorded this episode 3 weeks ago his following has leapt by 10,000 followers!)
As an artist, Andy is committed to following his dreams and taking risks but he learned his craft as an advertising creative working on some frankly brilliant creative campaigns in top London Advertising agencies.
Following a period of ill health and a rather brutal firing from his chosen career in advertising, Andy picked himself up by working on raising others spirits. He not only dared to dream but dared to take a risk on that dream and doing that has taken him on some amazing journeys. He has single-handedly crafted a strong brand with a loyal following, and he continues to work to spread positive messages in a world so often overcast with negative news. We massively enjoyed meeting up with Andy and we hope you all will too.

Is Twitter Dead?Jan 13, 2018 21:48
In this episode of the podcast, as well as shamelessly attempting to get attention with a doom-mongering headline we are discussing all things Twitter. The platform has seen some significant shifts and changes over the last few months so we thought we would share our thoughts on some of the new features. For the record, we don't think its dead at all, but the demographics do appear to have shifted.
Under discussion in this episode: 280 character tweets, Twitter threads, Twitter assistant, Twitter Promote, Twitter Analytics, Twitter Audiences and demographic reports, Twitter videos beta reporting, The Twitter Tracking Pixel. Daniel also shares a tool which enables you to analyse the words from any Twitter account to give you a summary of the personality of the account. To demonstrate the power of the tool we set it to analysing The Pope’s Twitter account and conclude he is in the right job.

What Makes An Effective Video Advertising Campaign?Dec 13, 2017 35:33
This episode has a bit of a backstory to it which we thought we would share with you. Ciaran was working on the podcast schedule when by chance he was contacted by another Ciaran Rogers on LinkedIn with a very simple message "Hey Ciaran, Great Name!" Out of curiosity he looked up the sender and saw his extensive background in advertising. They got chatting and the three days later recorded this episode over Skype. What started out as a bit of fun developed into a really interesting exploration of video advertising. ( Massively helped by the time and research which Ciaran G Rogers put into the project )
This time of year we are hit with a wave of seasonal must-see Ads. It would seem every big brand wants a flagship Ad that everyone is talking about and no expense is spared to dazzle. In this episode, we take a look at great work that works, not great work that works and ideas that seemed great that didn't work with video Ad examples from across the globe. Some of these advert examples we are sure you will be familiar with and some of which we hope are new to you. The object of the exercise was to boil what we can learn down into some vital ingredients that successful video advertising has. For show notes and links to videos please visit

CIM Digital Summit Special 2017: Gimmicks Vs RealityOct 17, 2017 24:53
Daniel talks us through the reality behind some of the latest technologies grabbing the headlines in marketing circles and at conferences. It's always worth taking a look at gimmicks vs reality in digital marketing so you can gain a deeper insight into what is happening in between the headline-grabbing stories that are circulating. Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are often confused as the same thing, but actually, they refer to something much more straightforward than the Hollywood future vision of artificial intelligence that circulates in the movie story world. Daniel walks us through what these labels currently represent and why Machine learning is a much better description of the technologies currently being bought into play. We also explore some of interesting and also, sometimes dubious uses of this technology. Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality Virtual reality and augmented reality are another two technologies that are often lumped together and used interchangeably but again there is a clear distinction between the two technologies. Yet to be used in widespread marketing use, these techniques are starting to take off in the gaming world. Daniel explores some of the issues with the technology behind these technologies and looks to some of the implications that marketers need to start thinking about. These technologies look set to become mainstream with Augmented Reality leading the charge as operating systems begin supporting the development of the tech. Daniel talks through some examples of current platforms which we should look at in order to start thinking how we might make use of them in our marketing. QR codes Ciaran is a long time fan of the QR code which failed to take off as we all hoped they might. Ciaran explores some of the reasons why they failed and got such a bad reputation as well as some of the ways that some brands got them to work well. He lives in hope that one day the technology will come back, and who knows. Maybe it will.

The-Raven-Tools-Story-Jon-Henshaw-interviewOct 9, 2017 41:38
This week we are bringing you an online story that as far as we know hasn't been told, and we think it's a good one. If you enjoyed last weeks episode on building faster websites [https://www.targetinternet.com/the-digital-marketing-podcast-episode-160-build-fast-websites/] this week's interviewee will be a familiar voice. When we caught up with Jon Henshaw, Raven Tools Co-founder, Ciaran couldn't help but ask Jon a whole heap of questions about Raven Tools and how it came into being. What followed was a fascinating insight into Jon's journey as an entrepreneur, from releasing a very early and free SEO tool over ten years ago and how that tool turned into one of the most used and respected tools and brands in the SEO world. Jon's journey was not without challenges and problems as you will hear. How Jon and his team rose to those challenges is an inspiration to anyone looking for online success with their business. For any of you on similar journey's or who aspire to achieve entrepreneurial success online, we hope this story will inspire and equip you to build your own success story through both the high points and low points of your journey. Build Faster WebsitesOct 4, 2017 31:06
Ciaran interviews Jon Henshaw, SEO expert and co-founder of Raven Tools. In this episode, we discuss AMP and How to make your website faster without needing to make use of AMP.What Is AMP?
AMP ( which stands for Accelerated Mobile pages) is a Google-backed project with the aim of speeding up the delivery of content through the use of stripped-down code known as AMP HTML. The idea behind the project was to make it easy for publishers to create mobile-friendly content once and have it load instantly everywhere.
It is proven that faster sites get a placement advantage in the Mobile Search engine results pages on Google and other Search engines. With mobile traffic now over half of the traffic most sites get it makes sense to improve the overall user experience of mobile device uses. So AMP Sounds like a great solution, right?Amp Issues
Jon shares some of the ways that the AMP user experience is failing to provide the improved user experience of publishers online content that was the project's original vision. Jon explains convincingly why he believes AMP is broken but if that is the case what is the alternative? Can you get the benefits of a fast site without resorting to AMP?
Jon argues you absolutely can if you follow his 5 top tips for making your site fast. It’s a compelling argument and one we hope will inspire you to consider some of these AMP free website building options for improving your site and results. Why is AMP Controversial?
Heralded as an open source project, Google has been championing AMP as the go-to easy solution to make your site faster for mobile users, providing a documented algorithmic boost to search engine results for sites that are making use of AMP. As you will learn from this interview, AMP is not without criticism online, and Jon is not the only one warning of some of the formats drawbacks. You can read more about some of the current criticisms of the AMP platform here.Useful Links

Test EverythingSep 17, 2017 23:05
Inspired by a podcast listener, Ciaran and Daniel explore the importance of testing everything in your Digital Marketing. We discuss both A/ B testing and Muti variate testing. If you start from the position that “You know nothing” it puts you in a good position to gain insights by testing and validating different variations of what you are doing. This technique can be incredibly insightful and because it doesn’t work on assumptions that can be wrong can very often surprise you. We also explore the new tool in the Google Suite for testing out different ideas and structures within your website, introducing you to Google Optimize.Listen to learn more about testing out your hypothesis and learning from the data that results.
We also speak to Digital Marketing Podcast Listener Kirtiman Kohli from India, who shares with us the insights he gained by employing Multivariate testing on his Facebook campaigns to quickly identify the best Ad headlines, and images for his content campaigns using https://adespresso.com to create all the variants. The technique drove 5x increase in the success of the campaigns by quickly identifying the best advert content combinations from hundreds of different variations. If you are interested in scaling up the reach of your Facebook campaigns without exponentially growing your budget to achieve this, Kirtiman’s experience and key learnings will be very insightful.
Is Your Ad Experience Good Enough For Your Customers?Sep 10, 2017 23:58
Daniel and Ciaran explore the importance of taking a good look at the experience your customers have of your brand or organisation when they experience your advertising online. What is it like to be on the receiving end of your brand advertising campaign?
In this episode, we explore some issues around online advertising tech and the user experience of Ads.
Banner advertising, in particular, has had a bit of a reputation of being forced upon users. Retargeting was supposed to help this but is often abused by marketers ( or their agencies) leading to a less than positive experience.
Daniel discusses programmatic advertising and some of the pitfalls of the technology. If you are using it, do you understand how it is impacting on your customer experience of your brand?
We also discuss the IAB’s self-regulatory initiative for online advertising. Is this the answer to ensuring consumers are not annoyed by over persistent online advertising?
For a long time now the Ad blocker debate has been raging between users who want to take control back of their online experience and Advertisers who want to ensure their all valuable content is paid for and monetised. Are micro payments the solution?
Over the last few months, we have noticed some interesting moves from Google who have taken some steps to try and encourage advertisers to re look at the advert experience and take action to improve it. For a long time now they have promoted a good match between users to search intent and the advertising displayed in search engine results through their innovative Ad quality score. Could we be seeing Google applying the same approach to encourage a win win advertising approach in display advertising with changes recently made on their Ad network and within Google Search Console reports? Is this real evidence that Ad experience will influence your Organic Search engine positions in the future? All of this and more is under discussion in this week’s episode.
