#191 - The Lost Episode: Our Top 5 Absolute Worst Films of 2013

Mar 12, 2014 01:43:18

Description:

Yes, it's March, and here it is: our long overdue Top 5 Absolute Worst films of 2013.

We recorded this episode back in January on the day the Oscar nominations were announced. At the time, of course, this was timely. Maybe it still is. Or maybe it can at least provide some balance to all the American Hustle and Gravity love dispenced at this year's Oscars.

Why is the a Lost Episode? Well ... While editing the audio my laptop went lights out. A total crash. I figured the audio was gone, so I put the thought of this minor tragedy behind me. Then, a couple days a go, while I was looking for a file, I found the 9 raw files comprising our Worst of '13 recording on one of my flash discs.

So here it is! Join me and fellow Boston Online Film Critic Association members Brett Michel and Bob Chipman as we discuss our absolute WORST moviegoing experiences of 2013.

It's angsty fun for one and all!

#133 – MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL, WE BOUGHT A ZOO and more!

Apr 19, 2012 47:30

Description:

Since the inception of DVDs more than a dozen years ago, home video Special Features - those wonderful and sometimes not so wonderful “extras” which seemingly validate purchasing the movie after you’ve seen it at the theater three months prior - have greatly improved in style and content. Case in point: The special features on Paramount’s Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol Blu-ray are state of the art. Tops in not only in style, but in menu presentation. The team that put together the disc clearly had it’s menus in mind while Ghost Protocol was being filmed.

In Extra Features 19, John and I get to talking about the Ghost Protocol disc, as well as the impressive We Bought a Zoo Blu-ray, which has a couple neat special features from Cameron Crowe and Co.

We also discuss the new titles: Kate & Leopold: The Special Edition (which is a fine film and a guilty pleasure, and I’ll stand by that claim), The Witches of Oz, Conversation Piece (starring Burt Lancaster), The Siege of Firebase Gloria (from 20th Century Fox’s video on demand), the French film The Conquest, Timur Bekmambetov’s The Darkest Hour; and The Marvel 3-Movie Collection (Thor, Hulk and Dr Strange) and The Marvel Movie Collection: Ultimate Avengers - both from Lionsate Home Video.

#96 - PULP FICTION, JACKIE BROWN, MANHUNTER and more!

Oct 11, 2011 36:53

Description:

New on video store shelves and up for extensive discussion in this episode is...

Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction (1994) and Jackie Brown (1997) on Blu-ray - Both films making their debut on blu-ray, with Pulp Fiction getting a little extra love in the form of newly produced special features: New Interviews with the Cast and a Critic's Retrospective on the Movie's Place in Film History with Elvis Mitchel and Scott Foundas. The Honeymooners: Lost Episodes 1951-1957 - The Complete Restored Series on DVD - A 15-disc set running more than 3,000 minutes. It's everything a Honeymooner's fan could want. Really. There's 30 sketches in the set that have never been on DVD, 18 of which haven't been seen since they originally aired in the 1950s. It's $139.00, but all sorts of goodness. Poltergeist II (1986) on Blu-ray - John recalls the horrors of that "attack of the braces" scene. "A dental nightmare." Hero's Island (1961) on DVD - From the MGM Limited Edition Collection, starring James Mason and a young Harry Dean Stanton. Irvin Kirshner's Robocop 2 (1990) on Blu-ray - Featuring all those pre-CGI go-motion effects by the wizardly Phil Tippet. Manhunter (1986) on Blu-ray - Starring a young Stephen Lang (Avatar and Terra Nova) and featuring another psycho bad guy performance by Tom Noonan (Robocop 2) Vidal Sassoon: The Movie (2011) on DVD and Blu-ray - Who would have thought we'd enjoy this film? You've got to love the way Mr. Sassoon did Mia Farrow's hair for Rosemary's Baby, and this doc shows you how that transpired. Ken Burn's and Lynn Novick's Prohibition on DVD and Blu-ray - I'm 4-hours into this 6-hour doc (a 3-disc blu-ray set). Where did the time go? Brian De Palma's Dressed to Kill (1980) on Blu-ray - a film that must be seen again to be appreciated. This new Blu-ray offers some nice special features, including The Making of Dressed to Kill and An Appreciation by Keith Gordon Featurette, which is rather insightful.

Click on the playback links and enjoy that show!

#89 - CONTAGION and WARRIOR

Sep 13, 2011 35:11

Description:

Steven Soderbergh's 'Contagion' and Gavin O'Connor's 'Warrior' get the full review treatment.

Other areas traversed...

- The Harvard Film Archive's 'American Punk' series ruled, like way seriously.
- Matt Damon is a great leading man because he's a great character actor.
- 'Suburbia' in 35mm is a trip.
- Sonny Chiba needs his own retrospective at Harvard.
- Eating during a movie can be exceptionally disruptive; sometimes as much as talking or texting.
- Gweneth Paltrow is a good sport. How can you not love what she lets Soderbergh do to her character in 'Contagion'?
- Find and watch 'Linda, Linda, Linda.'

#86 - Tossing texters from the theater

Aug 28, 2011 01:05:31

Description:

Inspired by an obnoxious "texter," Steve Head and John Black discuss what should be done to stop cell phone users during movies, and the protocol for booting these selfish, incosiderate jerks (particularly texters!) from a theater. We're at our wit's end. These people must go.

Receiving the full film review treatment is Guilermo del Toro's Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and the comedy Our Idiot Brother, starring Paul Rudd.

Also up for discussion is the new documentary Chasing Madoff, and the new home video releases: Akira Kurosawa's High & Low, Jodie Foster's The Beaver, the BBC's Top Gear 16, Blitz starring Jason Statham and Little Big Soldier starring Jackie Chan.

And Steve (having experienced a 5-hour screening of Cleopatra during the Harvard Film Archive's Joseph L. Mankiewicz retrospective) and John (who's seen the film *6* times) reminice about Taylor & Burton's epic 1963 debacle.

#79 - TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE whatever

Jun 30, 2011 52:11

Description:

Can't say we didn't warn you. But then, we all know what to expect from Michael Bay, right? So John and I endured the mega-mechanical CGI onslaught of Transformers: Dark of the Moon. All 156 minutes of it. Do we really have to explain why this is such a giant chunk of Hasbro-mash, you might ask? Sure, the movie is critic proof, but it's our job. And we will not shy away from it. We might cower and squirm in pain.Beyond that, the energizing act of eviscerating a movie is fun, and Michael Bay is an easy target. This is a pretty much a giant turkey shoot.

We did however enjoy Larry Crowne, which Tom Hanks wrote, produced, directed and stars in. It's a wonderful character-driven film, with Julia Roberts delivering her best performance in years. Do see it.

For our picks of the week, John says White Lightnin', starring Edward Hogg and Carrie Fisher, is worth a look. And we both agree the Criterion Collection's release of Kiss Me Deadly (1955) is truly a must see.

We recorded this episode outdoors, sitting on a bench in Boston Common - where there happened to be some sort of Anime festival taking place; a lot of college students dressed as anime characters. And they cheered from time to time. So... our apologies for any obtrusive and/or amusing background noises. Stuff happens on the Common, you know?

#78 - The CARS 2/BAD TEACHER train wreck

Jun 28, 2011 49:27

Description:

Joining John Black and Steve Head this week is film critic Greg Vellante. Greg writes for the Eagle Tribune, a New England daily. And you can find all of his reviews at GregVellante.com. This week they lament Pixar's dive into cold commercialism with Cars 2. Sure, Cars was Pixar's arguably least well received film. And, at least by Pixar's standards, it did alright at the box office. But the real money here is in its merchandising. It's billions, people. Billions. We also discuss the new Cameron Diaz comedy Bad Teacher. To enjoy it, we needed to willingly suspend our disbelief. But that didn't happen. We did, however, enjoy the new Pixar short Toy Story: Hawaiian Vacation, which plays before Cars 2.

For our picks of the week, John and Steve recommend the documentary American: The Bill Hicks Story, Steve can't say enough about the comedy Cedar Rapids, and Greg says you definitely have to check out Louie: Season One.

Jun 13, 2011 41:56

Description:

Film critic Brett Michel (The Boston Phoenix and the Boston Herald) joins Steve Head and John Black to discuss J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg's nostalgic fantasy adventure Super 8. They also attempt to figure out Terrence Malick's Palme d'Or winner The Tree of Life, which is now playing at The Coolidge Corner Theater and Kendal Square.

For our Picks of the Week, Steve explain why United Artists' Harry in Your Pocket (1973), starring James Coburn and Michael Sarrazin, is worth checking out. And John recommends Kino International's release of five new films from documentarian Nicolas Philibert, including Louvre City (1990), In the Land of the Deaf (1992), and Every Little Thing (1997).

#75 - X-MEN kinda kicks ass

Jun 6, 2011 53:38

Description:

It's all X-Men this week, as Bob Chipman (a.k.a. MovieBob and The Game Overthinker, and contributor to Escapist Magazine) joins John and me to discuss director Matthew Vaughn's excursion into the world of Marvel: X-Men: First Class. So many characters. So many mini-plot-lines. It seemed a recipe for a $160-million dollar mess. But... well... things ain't so messy. Turns out this darn X-Men prequel is perhaps the best of the lot. This we attempt to explain in 54 minutes.

For our picks of the week, John and I both admit our amazement for Fumihiko Sori's TO, the newly released Blu-ray/DVD anime set from Funimation. As for a couple more new titles, I say you've gotta check out director Leslie Zemeki's documentary about the history of burlesque in America,  Behind the Burly Q; John says the Sofia Loren Award Collection 4-disc set is an absolute Must See, in particular, her 1964 film Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow; and Bob says the Nicolas Cage actioner Drive Angry is all the over-the-top goodness it was intended to be.

This episode was recorded at Panera Bread, across the street from the Coolidge Corner Theater in Brookline, MA. As always, we tried to find a quite spot to record. Our apologies for any obtrusive background noise.

#74 - THE HANGOVER and over

May 30, 2011 48:06

Description:

Presented by ObsessedWithFilm.com -

Steve Head and John Black discuss the (sort of but not really) new comedy The Hangover Part II, and Woody Allen's likeable farce Midnight in Paris.

For our Picks of the Week, John says the new David Byrne rockumentary Ride, Rise, Roar is worth your time. And they both agree that Jason Robard's 1965 film, and Best Picture nominee, A Thousand Clowns is a nice find among MGM's new online-only retail offerings. John also recommends David Niven's 1975 flick Old Dracula.

This episode was recorded at Panera Bread across the street from the Coolidge Corner Theater. As always, we tried to find a quiet spot to record. Our apologies for any obtrusive background noise.

#73 - Mostly FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS on Blu-ray (Guest: Sean Burns)

May 28, 2011 35:14

Description:

Presented by ObsessedWithFilm.com -

Much to our surprise, the ever-dependable John Black couldn't make this recording session. Fortunately, film critic Sean Burns (The Improper Bostonian and Philadelphia Weekly) valiantly stepped-up to fill in. And so our Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas episode lives!  Terry Gilliam's 1998 adaption of Hunter S. Thompson's "failed experiment in Gonzo journalism" was recently upgraded to Blu-ray by Criterion. And we go on and on about it as, you know, fans do.

Plus we discuss Kelly Reichardt's Meek’s Cutoff - a film we agree needs more love at the box office.  Do see it if you can.

Presented by ObsessedWithFilm.com -

Joining John Black and Steve Head this week is Meg Quinn, film critic with Gatehouse Media's Ipswich Chronicle. We discuss all the goodness that is Bridesmaids, the latest product from the Judd Apatow factory. And, I must say, one of his best films to date. (Thank you, Ms Wiig.)

Also in this episode, we talk about the new film Hesher, starring Joseph Gordon-Leavitt, and Everything Must Go, starring Will Farrell. Meg and I aren't so keen on Everthing Must Go, but John explains why the movie is "well worth seeing, especially if you had any addictions."

And for our picks of the week, we can't say enough good things about Jonathan Demme's Something Wild (1986) And we can only say a couple good things, if that, about Richard Lester's How I Won the War (1967) co-starring John Lennon.

#65 - SUCKER PUNCH, SCARFACE and Girls, Guns and G-Strings (Guest: MovieBob)

Mar 26, 2011 01:10:25

Description:

Presented by ObsessedWithFilm.com -

On hand again to help Steve Head and John Black consider the merits of Zach Snyder's Sucker Punch is Bob Chipman, a.k.a. MovieBob and The Game Overthinker, and contributor to Escapist Magazine.  They go to town on Sucker Punch with a 70-minute episode in which they agree, disagree, laugh, cry, chide, and fall in love all over again.

For picks of the week, they discuss the films of Andy Sidaris, as featured in Mill Creek Entertainment's new 12-movie set Girls, Guns and G-strings. And then Warner Bros.' newly announced Blu-ray edition of Brian DiPalma's Scarface takes center stage.

Spoiler Alert: In the discussion of Sucker Punch, spoiler material abounds between 30:30 and 32:30.

Editors note: In the discussion of Scarface, the Debbie Harry song we can't recall is "Push Push."

This episode was recorded at Panera Bread, next to the Regal Fenway 13 Theater in Boston. So as always, the conversation is spurred by coffee, muffins and sandwiches - which helps. And that's why there's the clickity-clacking of plates and silverware you're

hearing at times in the background. Our apologies for that.

Description:

This week, your hosts Steve Head and John Black discuss the new Nicolas Cage actioner, Drive Angry 3D, and Farrelly brothers' comedy, Hall Pass, starring Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis.

On March 2nd and 3rd, in tribute to Peter Yates, the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Ma, will screen 35mm prints of two of his films: the quintessential Steve McQueen film Bullitt (1968), and the rarely seen British film Robbery (1967), starring Stanley Baker.  Visit brattlefilm.org for more information and to buy tickets.

#52 - LITTLE FOCKERS, GULLIVER'S TRAVELS and RARE EXPORTS: A CHRISTMAS TALE

Dec 23, 2010 01:00:10

Description:

Lately John and I have been favoring the "live" recording process (we go to a restaurant or coffee shop, find a table, set down the recorder and begin), in part because Skype can be, um ... kinda problematic. And eating and drinking while talking comes easy to us. So for the time being we're sticking with it. Live recording, that is. And eating and drinking, which I'm told is helpful.

Again this week we recorded the show at Panera Bread, next to the AMC Fenway 10 theater in Boston. The films discussed are Little Fockers, Gulliver's Travels and the Norweigan flick Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale.

Plus we offer our picks of the week. For me it's Cyrus, I'm Still Here and Troll 2 on Blu-ray. For John it's A&E's Billy the Exterminator: Season One.
