Episode 300 - Refuse To Lose

Jun 6, 2018 01:50:13

Description:

The "Matt B. Davis Runs" Podcast was born on BlogTalkRadio on Monday July 2, 2012. I did not have any podcast recording or editing tools and had zero clue what I was doing. Someone must have told me about BlogTalk and I figured out this super basic platform. I knew that I could play an intro song, have people call in to the show in the middle, and play a song at the end for an outro. That's as much as I could do, so I gave it a shot.

In the first few weeks of the show, I realized that there was also a chat aspect to that platform that I could enable. I started doing the show at night and it instantly became super OCR community friendly. Nowadays, anyone can go live video on a zillion platforms, but back then, this was brand new. So when the show went live, the handful of us from various ocr groups in the country would talk to each other/ask questions etc. Monday (and sometimes Thursday) nights became a nice little meetup spot, and it helped me connect with the audience, and kept me super engaged in the process.

The show got me well known to obstacle racers, the people behind the races, and anyone in the OCR community (even if many of them had to have what a podcast was explained to them). After a month or so, people starting reaching out to me to be on the show. The were athletes wanting to tell their story or RD's wanting to get the word out for their race. Soon after a website and social media followed and I began to produce more and more content. It has been well documented, as I have told this over the years, that I just sort of quickly became "the guy" in OCR.

The short story and the long story of the rest, is history.

That's all I really want to say here, as you can hear an opening 15 minutes of me digging deeper into my feelings about the whole thing on this episode.

I do want to thank all of you that have listened over the past 6 years as you have helped me more than you'll ever know, as a host and as a person.

On today's program....

2 people, like me, who refuse to lose. Anthony Matesi and Morgan McKay, both of my guests from Episode 1.

Anthony has gone from obstacle and endurance racer to, amongst other things, a bunch of different jobs at Spartan Race. He's also launched his own companies, as he continues to find his purpose. He also recently completed one of the most difficult ultra marathons on the east coast in the Georgia Death Race. He was in town after his GDR experience so he talked to me about it, plus we cover some of what life has brought his way since I first met him.

Morgan broke a Guinness World Record for running a 10K race with 100 pounds on her back. The day after she broke the record, she hopped on the phone with me to talk about the experience. Plus we go down memory lane to talk about all that's happened in the last 6 years.

Interviews From The Recent OCRWC Disqualification

Nov 23, 2017 52:18

Description:

The OCR World Championships released breaking news at 8:00am this morning. OCRWC is disqualifying a 2017 participant due to "violating anti-doping policy". Ryan Woods becomes the first OCR competitor in history to be DQ'd at any obstacle race for this reason.

You can read the complete OCRWC article here which includes a response statement from Ryan Woods.

Ryan's 3rd place, 15k finish is off the record books for OCRWC 2017. In addition, his team had won the OCRWC Sunday team relay. That team of Woods, Ryan Atkins and Hunter McIntyre, is now also disqualified.

We got a hold of both of Ryan's teammates as soon as possible.

Ryan Atkins told us:

There aren’t many people I’ve met who have been as genuine, nice and just generally “good” as Ryan Woods. I believe he made an honest mistake and hope he remains as a competitor in the sport.

We reached Hunter McIntyre via text who said:

I like Ryan for his personality, not his body. Also Ryan and I shared a bed after Tougher Mudder Championship. It was a very pleasant experience.

The podcast episode below is an in-depth conversation with Ryan Woods recorded just a few hours ago. Adrian Bijanada, head of OCRWC, also made himself available to answer a few questions. You can hear those conversations by clicking on the link below or Itunes link above.

**Update - I also reached out to both Spartan Race and Tough Mudder to find out if this affects any past results or future participation for Mr. Woods. Neither were able to comment on the record at this time.

When I dug into that old episode, I found a gem with my daughter Emma, old ads, and more. So listen in to this exciting snapshot into the OCR landscape that was 2013.

Also, today's Amelia talks about her recent Texas race performance, her time in the new Spartan Live booth, and the upcoming Monterey Super.

Lindsey Runkel

Aug 19, 2016 37:50

Description:

Being athletic growing up, Lindsey tried just about every sport you can think of. A few years ago, she bought a street bike, got bored quickly, and looked into competitive mountain biking. Then, in October of 2014, she had a bad bike accident which left her paralyzed below the waist.

Told immediately she would never walk again, she has been determined to prove that doctor, and many others wrong. She got an adaptive bike, is riding harder than ever, and found the OCR community along the way.

For her Instagram:

When I'm on my bike, I forget I'm paralyzed. I forget about everything but the dirt below me and the trail ahead of me. It's just me and the bike. I ride to be free from a condition that otherwise controls my every move. I ride for myself. I ride for all of those who believe that they are destined to be trapped in their disabled bodies. I ride for Paul. Because there is life beyond disability. There is freedom. You just have to be willing to seek it out.

Let's Talk About Training Masks

Jun 12, 2016 48:30

Description:

The Preface

Two weeks ago, Obstacle Racing Media published a podcast interview with Dr. Jason Wagner. We reached out to Jason as a direct result of his blog post questioning the legitimacy and effectiveness of the “Elevation Training Mask”. I personally reached out to TrainingMask.com shortly after this episode aired to see if they wanted to respond to any of Jason’s findings.

I got in touch with the CEO of Training Mask LLC, Casey Danford, and he suggested we speak with Brian MacKenzie. Brian is a world renowned strength and conditioning coach and has studied altitude and hypoxic training for over 10 years. Brian works for Training Mask, LLC as an independent contractor and wears the loose title of “Research & Development in Human Performance”.

I chose to have Joshua Grant on the call with me to ask some tough questions. Josh is a well respected athlete and has become ORM’s resident skeptic/myth buster. Many in the OCR community may remember his appearance with the inventor of "Let's Talk About Oral I.V." on a previous podcast episode.

The episode

Listen in and let the episode speak for itself.

The Aftermath

Several questions came up during the call regarding the true benefits/claims of the mask. The largest bone of contention being that the mask has nothing to do with actual “elevation training”. Statements had been made previously by some associated with Training Mask, LLC that many were aware these benefits did not exist, but that it didn’t mean the Training Mask wasn’t a quality product, didn’t have other benefits, etc.

Joshua Grant pointed out that the words “elevation mask” (along with the logo appearance of mountains still appearing on the mask and its packaging) was misleading consumers.

When this point was raised, Brian answered the best he could, then referred us back to Casey Danford, the CEO of Training Mask, for further discussion.

This afternoon we received breaking news in the form of an email from Mr. Danford.

Click here to read about the name change to Resistance Training Mask.

Elevation Training Masks w/ Dr. Jason Wagner

Description:

Episode 181 -Jason is a doctor/obstacle racer who wrote a blog post that began this way:

I’m a lung doc and have spent more hours than I can count studying cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology. This makes it nearly impossible for me to ignore all the attention that elevation training masks are getting.

We read the rest of hist post and we found it insightful and humorous. We wanted to bring him on so that we could ask questions about what training masks do/don't accomplish. In addition, we asked him about how to train for elevation, and even IF one should attempt to train for elevation.

Andy Weinberg - The Endurance Society

Feb 12, 2016 01:24:17

Episode 168 - First up, as promised, Amelia and Carlo join Matt for a chat about Superbowl 50. They really planned on no running talk, but then Amelia went and placed 2nd at The Sean O'Brien 100k. Then, we chat with Andy Weinberg. Andy co-founded The Death Race with Joe DeSena nearly 10 years ago. Joe and Andy have since split and Andy created The Endurance Society with his new partner, Jack Cary. Jesse Itzler

Feb 4, 2016 01:07:59

Description:

Episode 167 - Jesse Itzler used to leave funny outgoing messages on his answering machine back in college. They were so good , they went viral, the old school way. Pre-Internet, people would tell friends, who would tell friends, who would tell more friends. This led him to a record deal with Delicious Vinyl.

To many people, landing a record deal is THE dream. Like, we got a DEAL, MAN!

This, however, was just the beginning for Jesse.

Jesse and Matt discuss how landing this deal led a lot of cool business doings in Itzler's life including:

Creating music and video content for NBA (and other sports) teams. Co founding Marquis Jets, the first private jet company allowing customers to "rent" versus "own". Becoming part owner of The Atlanta Hawks

There is a lot to be learned in this episode from a successful man who doesn't seem to stress about any of it.

(They ran out of time before Matt could even ask about co-founding Zico Water or Jesse's new book "Living with a Seal", so hopefully there will be a part two.)

Description:

Episode 166 - For starters, as promised, its 15 minutes with Carlo and Amelia to talk NFL Championship games.  Amelia also expands a little on the whole "enjoying dry needling in her butt" that she eluded to on  The Tim Ferris Podcast. For those that hate our football chats,  you can fast right the heck forward. For those that love them, enjoy.

The main course on this episode is Jesse Fulton. Jesse was a professional snowboarder for 13 years before going on to coach the Canadian Olympic snowboarding team.  He also is one of the founders of 365 Sports.

365's website says that they "Specialize in Event Management, Experiential Marketing, Concept and Development and Brand Execution. We provide creative, fun and innovative athletic events to engage all participants, seasoned athletes and novices alike. We are dedicated to inspiring a healthier, happier society through the combination of fitness and philanthropy"

In other words, they put on cool ass events like ski and snowboard festivals, The Urban Slide, and 5K Foam Fest Canada. 365 was also announced as strategic partner for the OCR World Championships, which is what led to this interview.

Jesse and Matt talk about translating industry knowledge from "action/adventure sports" to OCR, how to launch a brand successfully in Canada that previously failed in the US, and what he and his team are going to bring to OCRWC.

Christian Griffith #liveforaliving

Nov 6, 2015 01:17:08

Description:

Episode 154 - Christian Griffith does not do anything quietly or half-assed. When Matt met Christian in 2012, Christian was already living what most consider a "pretty good life". He had a well paying job at an ad agency in which he could dress how he wanted, and travel to races all over the world on any given week. That was not enough for him and in April of this year, he moved from Atlanta to Jacksonville, FL to go work for GORUCK.

Sounds great right? Still in marketing, but for a gear and event company that pushes people past their comfort zone. Seems like a perfect fit, however, 7 months into that job and he realized he still had a thirst for more. Much more.

On Monday, Christian left GORUCK to start the next chapter of his life.

Listen in and find out how he plans on taking on truly being his hashtag #liveforaliving.

Episode 141 - Cassidy Watton was the 2nd place female and finished ahead of 75% of the men in the elite field at last October's OCR World Championships. Since then, she has had a number of top finishes including 2nd at the Spartan in Sydney, AUS stadium Sprint, 2nd at the SoCal Beast, 2nd on the Bahamas Cruise, and 1st at The Citifield stadium race.

At one of the more brutal Spartan courses this year, the Palmerton, PA Super, she finished ahead of  powerhouses April Dee, Deanna Blegg, and KK Paul.  Even after a year like this, her competitors seem to share the spotlight with each other, but not her.

In this interview, we talk to her about that, and if it affects her in any way. We will also learn about her college sports career, who led her to obstacle racing (we'll give you 3 guesses), and what her future OCR plans are. Matt also digs into her diet and workout plans, cause we know many of you enjoy finding out "What The Pros Do".

Let's Talk About Oral IV

May 22, 2015 42:21

Description:

Episode 131 - You may have seen the ORAL I.V. logo on the chest or arms of several OCR athletes recently including Joey Patrolia, Orla "Vermonster" Walsh, and Sarah Pozdol.

According to their website, ORAL I.V. is "a hydration aid developed to enhance the body’s uptake of water through the introduction of a proprietary blend of trace minerals". "ORAL I.V. aids the hydration process for individuals who train hard, work hard and are committed to peak performance."

Sometime last year, ORM posted an article written by another source that was not kind to ORAL IV. We had a phone call with Bob Jones, president of ORAL IV, where Bob asked to give a rebuttal to that article.

We told him our podcast would be a perfect forum for that.  We then invited him to appear on the show, along with a member of the OCR community who would ask some questions about the product.

Mr. Jones said it was a great idea, and referred us to Dr. Anthony Beck, the creator of the product, as the man to be on the call.

Joshua Gustin Grant, is a previous guest on the podcast and a guy known to question almost everything. So I invited him on the call to do the inquiring.

Dr Beck Resume:

The Undress and Muddy Duck Dash

Dec 20, 2014 40:49

Description:

Episode 111 - Today's episode has two conversations. The first is the kind you have come to expect from this podcast, an interview with a race director. We talk to Warren Caputo who puts on Muddy Duck Dash. It's a fantastic small scale OCR in Georgia. Listen in to hear about the simple, yet fun and creative things this race does. We wish them much success and hope more and more people come and check them out.

The 2nd interview goes in a very different direction. We talk to Dennis Caco from something called The Undress. Dennis and his business partner April created this very cool product which solves a common problem for runners, and other athletes who need to change their clothes on the go. Watch their kickstarter video linked above, then listen in. We learn about what it was like to seek out $22,000 and end up with $615,000 in donations. We also talk about why we think the OCR crowd will love this product and much more.

His stories have been featured in blogs posts and Facebook and have been an inspiration to many.

We finally got a chance to sit down for an interview with him to learn about his past, present, and future.

Enjoy.

Nov 1, 2013 39:42

Description:

Episode 71-Yesterday, Run For Your Lives cancelled all future events including one this weekend. This morning Ruckus Events cancelled their Boston event which was also scheduled for this weekend. Jeff Suffolk from Human Movement Management contacted Obstacle Racing Media and said "No Mas".

Human Movement already produces a a bevvy of successful races such as The Color Run, Dirty Girl Mud Run, 5k Foam Fest and many more. Today he and Matt talked about where his company came from, where the industry is going, and why he wants to give customers a great experience even if he has to lose some money on the front end to do so.

We were thrilled to be the ones to break the great news this morning, and we are thrilled to bring you this interview in it's entirety.

Junyong Pak Quits and A Double Dose of Desena

Aug 22, 2013 01:13:08

Description:

Episode 63-Joe Desena was on CNBC this morning, you can watch the clip here. I was under the impression that it would be an intelligent conversation about OCR, the growth of the sport, and/or sponsorship dollars. It was not. This gave me a great excuse to call Joe and talk about anything that changed since we last spoke about the big Vermont race. I also wanted to see how he thought the CNBC piece went. Please listen very close to the end of the first segment with Joe for some sage advice.

I was already planning to air interviews which had taken place just days after the Death Race ended. So, lucky you, you get a double dose of Joe Desena on today's podcast.

You will also hear from Junyong Pak. Pak is best known for being the 2X World's Toughest Mudder. He is also a previous Death Race finisher. It came as a surprise to many when he quit this year's Death Race about 12 hours before it ended. I ask him what happened and if he ever plans on doing the DR again.

Today's episode is brought to you by Man Games. Their amazing first event takes place Sept 6 and 7th.

Hunter Gatherer Preview and Mud Endeavor Review

Aug 16, 2013 56:17

I then play an interview with Randy Yolo of Mud Endeavor. Randy puts on small, local, high quality, obstacle races with great success. We talk about how simple doesn't mean easy in OCR and how you can build a strong following by doing a few things really well.

Next up is Josue Stevens, the man behind Hunter Gatherer. Josue's FuegoYAgua Survival Run put the OCR/Adventure/Ultra world on it's ear last February with tasks that included carrying chickens, climbing trees, and running around with eggs on people's foreheads. Find out what it's going to take to be a finisher this time around. He also gives a sneak peak about the NEXT Survival Run, which he is alreday planning.

Today's episode is brought to you by Pretty Muddy and by Bone Frog Challege.

Death Race Part III and Joe Desena

Aug 7, 2013 01:27:43

Description:

Episode 61-The interviews in this episode kick off with a short call I had with Joe DeSena. He talks about the recent "Spartan Rash" that occured at the recent Spartan Race in Illinois. He also talks about a TV show in the works for NBC. I then, sort of, beg for a job.

Next, I speak with 3 2013 Summer Death Race finishers. Amelia Boone, Olof Dallner, and Pete Coleman.  These 3 all got skulls which means they did everything (or almost everything) asked and outlasted everyone else over the course of 3 days.  I wanted to know how this DR compared to previous ones, and find out what it takes to actually finish one of these things.

Jason Pittman

Jul 30, 2013 01:08:33

Description:

(Episode 60) I met Jason Pittman earlier this year through a mutual friend, and we decided to go for an early morning run.

I was surprised to discover that Jason had spent the last 15 years working in the Atlanta rock and hip-hop scene. He produced, managed and booked everyone imaginable.

His list of heavy hitters includes: Lil John, Bone Crusher, Ying Yang Twins, Too $hort, and David Banner.

Find out all of the ways that Jason stayed in the mix.

Also hear about his big break in 2007, producing the Shop Boyz mega hit "Party Like A Rockstar".

I learned a lot about the music business, and I was reminded what it was like to wait in line at the store for a new record.

Tune in for what is one of the most interesting interviews I've done to date.

Today's episode is sponsored by Ruckus.  Use Code ORM15 for $15 any location.

UQuest, Alpha Warrior, and Shale Hill Adventure

Jul 25, 2013 01:11:53

Description:

In today's episode (Episode 59), we interview folks from 3 very different events.

UQuest is part scavenger hunt, part scavenger hunt, part unknown. Matt spoke with Anthony Murph, founder, and Steph Dennis, event director in their Atlanta office.

Alex ThunderDart Martin, in his first assignment as West Coast Ops, interviews some people behind Alpha Warrior. He sat down with David Nolan and Joe and Mike Timmons, the 3 men behind the concept of this obstacle only event. He also spent a few minutes with two members of the Alpha Warrior Elite Team Kacy Catanzaro and Brent Steffenson. These two have both been featured on American Ninja Warrior recently and are great ambassadors for the event.

Last, we bring you the interview Matt did with Rob Butler from Shale Hill Adventure which is a permanent course which puts on races and is also one of a kind training center.  Matt did the course with the NE Spahtens while up in Vermont for Death Race weekend and spoke with Rob shortly after doing the course.

Today's Episode is sponsored by Pretty Muddy. A female only obstacle course coming to Chicago, Atlanta, Richmond, Tampa, Miami, and Central Ohio in 2013. Pretty Awesome. Pretty Fun. Pretty Mun.

We begin with Andy Weinberg speaking to the familes and crew members shortly after the athletes were sent off to build the "Stairway to Heaven".  As we continue on, we give you a sneak peek inside the mind of Joe Desena as we followed him around as much as possible. You'll hear how he deals with the racers as they decide to quit, keep going, or in one case, beg to be DQ'd.

We also catch some various racers thoughts and feelings throughout the next 48-72 hours. We end with two finishers, Erica Matta and Andrew Hostetler. This duo sums up their experience and the DR experience as a whole rather well.

Today's episode is sponsored by Superhero Scramble. This awesome race has 3 more races to go this year including the marathon distance SuperVillian to take place in Illinois on August 24th.

Housekeeping note: We now have a new permanent home for the podcast on iTunes

Mandy Baskin and Man Games

Jul 16, 2013 01:00:26

Description:

You probably have not heard of Mandy Baskin. At first glance, she is just an average 38 year old woman who happens to run a hot-air balloon company. Look closer and you will find an athletic champion. She was the 3rd place woman at least year's World's Toughest Mudder completing an impressive 6 laps. She was the only woman to do that other than Amelia Boone, and Deanna Blegg.  Then in March of this year, she won the very muddy, very wet Sunday race at the Carolina Spartan Sprint.

Our 2nd interview is with Cory Mulcock and Jacob Munns of Man Games. What the heck is Man Games?! I was dying to find out as much as you were. Check out their website and listen in to find out how men AND women are going to be blown away by this insane weekend of fun and competition.

2013 Summer Death Race Part One

Jul 10, 2013 01:06:25

Description:

In this long awaited episode we take you to Pittsfield Vermont for Part One of the 2013 Summer Death Race.

We begin our journey on Thursday June 20th and talk to some racers as they enjoy their "last meal" before the big event. This leads us to Friday morning's registration, the first tasks, veteran shenanigans, and some other fun interviews all recorded live from Pittsfield.

Like the World's Toughest Mudder and Fuego y Agua episodes that precededed it, we hope the voices and sounds that you hear bring you the experience as if you were there. For those that were, we hope it can bring you back.

Today's episode is brought to you by Man Games. A one day obstacle competition like nothing you have ever seen.

PS I  also spend a few minutes at the beginning of the episode bringing you up to speed with what has been going on with myself, and ORM.

Ernest "The Cat" Miller

Jul 2, 2013 01:03:53

Description:

I met Ernest Miller  through a mutual OCR friend. As I have gotten to know Ernest, I have been fascinated at how quiet, cool, and humble this dude is. Quite the opposite of his character "The Cat" that he portrayed as a professional wrestler for many years.  Back in his WCW and WWE days, he was a heel (bad guy) that people loved to hate.

We sat down and talked about wrestling, acting, OCR, and how being a nice guy has helped him finish first.

Ernest The Cat Miller

Click here to hear the full version of The Cat's wrestling entrance theme.

PS I know many of you have been patiently waiting all of the Death Race interviews, be patient as I will get those episodes up as soon as I can.

World's Toughest Mudder Changes and The O-Run Team Challenge

Jun 13, 2013 01:06:23

Description:

I was very skeptical about The O-Run Team Challenge.  Del Boykin told me what almost every race director tells me. That his race is going to kick my butt and will exhaust me. I was pleasantly surprised when 3 friends and I took on the event recently here in Georgia. The obstacles were as heavy/difficult/challenging as any I have come across. (yes, including a Spartan).  Listen in as I talk to Del about his race and how he can replicate this awesome event in other places.

Recently, Tough Mudder decided to open up The World's Toughest Mudder to all participants. They also announced more prize money, special awards, and support crews. You will hear from Nolan Kombol, Head of Course Design at TM as he answers the questions all of you want to know. I also thought it would be a good excuse to catch up with Amelia Boone. I had not spoken with Amelia in a few months and I thought I would catch up with how her year is going and learn her thoughts on this year's WTM changes.

...all that and a very special OCR athlete that has never given an interview anywhere before.

Elliot Megquier and The Rising Tribe Obstacle Race

Jun 5, 2013 01:01:00

Description:

Elliot Megquier is known for one thing. Making the podium (usually first) at Sunday Spartan Races. Wait, two things. He is also known for getting lost a lot. Make that three things, he also talks a lot of smack before, during, and after his races.

The Rising Tribe is the first OCR where you actually race with your family (as opposed to the children running the kids race later in the day). Listen in to hear how Gary Xavier and his team plan to bring this whole new approach to obstacle racing and mud runs.

Enjoy.

Hunter Beats Hobie and Life in the Day of a Runner

May 29, 2013 01:05:01

Description:

If you have not heard by now. Hobie Call lost for the first time in any obstacle race less than half marathon distance. He was beaten by Hunter "The Sheriff" McIntyre at the Superhero Scramble Intimidator in Clermont, Florida on Saturday. With less than a mile to go, he was actually in 5th place before turning it on to finish 2nd.

In today's episode, you will hear interviews with Hobie, Hunter, and David Magida. David placed 4th less than 30 seconds behind Hobie. They will all talk about how important swimming was at this race and how that race affected the future of OCR.

I will then play my interview with Rachel Moraes. She is a mom, an english teacher, and part time college student. She runs marathons, OCRs, and ultras. We crossed paths online one day and I was excited to speak with her. This interview took place a few months ago, so I am glad to finally bring it to you.

Episode 1-Death Racers Refuse to Lose

May 23, 2013 44:49

Description:

Having already endured 48 hours of torture known as The Death Race, you think being told that you were disqualified would stop two people from going forward.

Anthony Matesi and Morgan Mckay did what very few could. They kept going even when there was "no hope"

We will chat with them about what brought them individually to the Death Race and how they perservered together.

R3OPS Obstacle Race and The Great Bull Run

May 21, 2013 47:54

Description:

On today’s episode I have two great interviews.

One is with the first female OCR director that I have heard of, Nicole Farber. She is bringing her new race to the northeast and is off to some great beginnings. Find all about R3OPS and their special cause.

Next up is Rob with The Great Bull Run. Lots has been said, pro and con, before TGBR has even had their first event. I ask the event director all the questions you are wondering. Are the bulls hurt? Can I die? What were you thinking?

Chef Richard Blais and The Triple Race Challenge

May 13, 2013 54:32

Description:

In today's episode, we start by talking about the Triple Race Challenge that I did over the weekend. I successfully completed 3 races in one day and am challenging others to top this feat. Listen in to hear the official announcement on how you can win a free entry to a future OCR event of your choice by doing so.  I will also talk about two of the three races that I did. Savage Race and The Electric Run were both awesome events, for completely different reasons.  Hear me tell you why.

I will then play my interview with Chef Richard Blais. For those that don't know him, Chef Blais won Top Chef All Stars and has begun building a small empire which includes 4 restaraunts in Atlanta alone, a new book "Try This At Home", and tv appearances it seems almost daily.  It turns out he is a runner which gave me a great reason to sit down and talk with him.  We talk about running, food, Top Chef, and some of his future plans. I then attempt to convince him to attempt an obstacle race in the near future.

First Ever Gay Obstacle Race and Brad Kloha's Run To Remember

May 8, 2013 53:32

Description:

Another podcast episode chock full of obstacle goodness.

First, I talk a little about the need for some rule tightening over at Spartan.

Then, we have two great interviews for you I have done in recent weeks.

Brad Kloha is going to run 100 races (mostly obstacle) in 52 weeks starting June 15th.  He is on a mission to stop Alzheimer's. Listen in to learn what inspired this cool adventure and how he plans on getting it done.

The other interview is with Tory Fitzgerald of Out-Fit Challenge. The world's first LGBT obstacle race. OCR is already the most fun you can have your clothes (mostly) on. Imagine all that mud and fun with the added the flair of the gay community, hellloooo!

Tragedy at Tough Mudder WV/Cole Lindbergh at Hard Charge Obstacle Race

Apr 24, 2013 01:11:39

Description:

For the 2nd week in a row, there was tragedy around a racing event. Two weeks ago it was the Boston Marathon, and this past weekend it was Tough Mudder in West Viriginia. Avi Sengupta, a 28 year old Maryland resident, died after being submerged underwater for an extended period of time at the "Walk the Plank" obstacle. Matt and Obstacle Racing Magazine are in the middle of interviewing several witnesses and investigating this fully. In the meantime, here is a brief phone call with one of Avi's friends who was on site at Tough Mudder last Saturday.

Cole Lindbergh worked at an amusement park called Worlds of Fun for 14 years. His story was documented on an episode of This American Life. I decided he might be someone who would love to run an obstacle race, so I met him in Wichita to run a new obstacle race called Hard Charge. Listen to find out what Cole has been up to since leaving Worlds of Fun and if he found a new love in obstacle racing.
