Nic Treadwell is Missing!

Oct 6, 2014

Description:

Hi, my name is Nigel Rooke. I am a long Tim friend of Nic Treadwell. Three days ago Nic went missing from his home in Rowley Regis. I took the attached photo of Nic last week when we had a beer together. He seemed ok but his last words to me, "I've really had enough Nige..." Have left a chill in my bones. Admittedly he spoke these words in answer to me offering him a pork scratching but there you go.

I kno Nic was making plans to re-start his podcasting career, which makes his disappearance all the more tragic.

Please help me find my friend. Share this photo on Twitter and Facebook by using the #whereistreadwell

And above all keep him in your prayers.

Homegrown Programme 209

The Homegrown Podcast in 2013

Nov 2, 2013

Description:

Born in 2005 out of boredom and a lack of challenging music radio programming,
Homegrown Podcast has become a twice monthly multi genre mixed music &
spoken word podcast with a very broad ear. Each & every programme is built
from the bottom up by its producer and host Nic Treadwell, by handpicking
tracks he finds scattered around the world wide web and beyond (often into
the very early hours).

Nic has always firmly believed that the worlds of poetry and song should co-exist
with each other, having the potential to take the listener on an emotional and
personal journey of creativity and understanding. Each and every Homegrown
is peppered with a sprinkling of poetry and spoked word artists that complimen
t and add to the musical mix.

In 2010 the podcast was kicked out of Treadwell Towers (the home he shares with
wife & son) and transplanted, literally, into his new purpose built man shed, where
he now broadcasts to the world. God only knows what the neighbours must think
when he staggers down the garden at 2am after uploading another eclectic playlist.

No one edition of the podcast is the same, offering up music from the world over,
whether pitting Saharan Toureg against Swedish pop, or letting British folk rub
shoulders with Austrailan electronica. From blues to bluegrass, and roots to rock,
taking in gospel and experimental music along the way, the podcast certainly
covers a lot of ground.

Like its host, whose broadcasting heroes include John Peel, Andy Kershaw and
Bob Harris, the programme does not shy away from broadening its horizions, along
the way discovering both breathtaking & challenging material that leaves the listener
wanting more.

Its title, which means "Watercolor of Brazil" in Portuguese,

Homegrown Podcast Donations Drive

Feb 22, 2011

Description:

Since beginning the Homegrown Podcast in November of 2005 I've produced 148 quality programmes featuring hundreds the best, strangest and gifted artists existing on the internet and beyond. All of these programmes have been lovingly created and produced by your truly. It's a time consuming process spanning thousands of hours to research, produce and keep going. I've resisted sponsorship and ads as I think they detract from the flow of the programme.

Since that beginning in 2005 I've been lucky to get complementary hosting for the podcast at Libsyn, a podcast hosting site that normally charges anything up to $20 per month for storage and syndication of the media. I've had this free service due to being a member of The Association Of Music Podcasting, a group of podcasters who produce mainly music based programmes. Now, due to changes in Libsyn's service they have decided to withdraw the free hosting from the end of this month. This leaves me in a bit of a pickle. I love producing these programmes, I enjoy finding new music and spoken word material for the listener ship and I hope that you as listeners in turn enjoy the podcasts.

I want to continue to provide this podcast totally for free. I think it's wrong to inflict monetary charges at this point as it is not in keeping with the ethos I have for bringing new material to as wide an audience as possible. Podcasting is a hobby for me, and therefore I am prepared to fund some money to pay for its up keep, however as the podcast serves a wider world audience I would hope that listeners would like to take some responsibility for it's continuation. This seems a fair deal when so many artists are benefiting from exposure on the programme.

The amount I need to fund a year of hosting is a minimum of $180 or around £110. Thats not a great deal and I feel that asking for donations from listeners would be the best way to secure some or all of this fee. I know that there have been thousands of listeners to this podcast over the years and I'm asking you right now for a little support, a bit of team work, you have been a great resource for donating music and poetry and now I hope you will help me to continue what I love to do, here in my corner of the internet.

During the month of March I will having a donations drive for Homegrown, I will producing as many editions of the podcast as I can, in return I ask you to give as little or as much as you can by clicking on the Paypal donations button at the top left menu of www.homegrownpodcast.co.uk

I hope that by the end of March I won't have to ask for donations again till next year, although the button will remain all year for continued support.

I appreciate your support and hope that you'll join me in supporting a truly independent, unique and enjoyable programme.

I'm trying to put together a podcast of listener memories and stories about John Peel. The podcast will be a mixture of listener memories and new independent music which John would be championing if he were still with us.

Were you a listener and fan of his programmes.
Do you have any memories about a specific time that you were listening?
Did John change your musical taste?
Did something significant happen to your life as a result of listening to him.
What are your memories, happy, sad, embarrassing or nostalgic.
If so, and you can record an audio mp3 of yourself, and please send it to nic@storyville.f9.co.uk

I am planning the podcast to coincide with the anniversary of his death toward the end of October. So please send your contribution by October 21st at the latest.

Your assistance in this is greatly appreciated. If you do not have the ability to record your story and you can submit a written account please do so and I will consider it for inclusion.

The Cornbury Music Festival

This week myself and Mrs Nic hotfooted it down Oxford way to bask in the sunshine and  sup a frozen margarita or two, while listening to the likes of Suzanne Vega, The Proclaimers, The Waterboys, David Gray and The Feeling at the highly civilised Cornbury Music Festival. Not a piece of mud for miles. But what of the little up coming indie type artists on the smaller stages I hear you
cry? Well, sit back and have a listen as I walk you through some of the sights and sounds of what was a truly scorching weekend of music.

Description:

This programme is a compilation of my audio blogs from 24th Feb till 5th March 2007 while I have been participating in the Slam Idol Open Writing Challenge. The premise of the competition is to get 6 poets to create an original poem over 10 days, while audio blogging their creative process and progress.

You can find out more about the competition by following the link below to the Slam Idol website and listening to the other competitors. I had a great deal of fun and a little frustration in creating my poem, which took up quite a bit of time. Hence no typical Homegrown this week. But I hope you enjoy this all poetry programme and insight into my own creative process.

There will soon be a voting process on Slam Idol to find listeners favourite poem.

Bum Rush The Charts

Feb 22, 2007

Description:

This is a cool idea. To show the awsome power of social media in action and to send the music biz a big message, a group have got together and have come up with the idea of getting an idependent music artist to number one in the ITUNES music charts for one day, 22nd March 2006. They are asking everyone to purchase this song from ITUNES on this day. And they have signed up as an affiliate of the iTunes Music Store, and every commission made on the sale of the chosen song by Black Lab called "Mine Again" will be donated to college scholarships, partly because it's a worthy cause, but also partly because college students are among the most misunderstood and underestimated groups of people by big media.

The date for the combined effort is 22nd March. You can find out more about this at their web site at http://bumrushthecharts.blogspot.com/

Special studio guest Giovanni Esposito aka Spoz the 11th Birmingham Poet Laureate
‘Spoz' being the bit between the ‘E' and the ‘ito' (kind of). Spoz describes himself as a sort of poet. The sort, in fact, that has been published, recorded, been on the radio, won awards, is a member of the renowned ‘New October Poets', taken part in so many festivals, he's lost count and even had a commission from the BBC. The sort of poet that isn't quite everybody's cup of tea, though, could be yours. He's a singer, songwriter, playwright and musical writer. He has produced and directed self penned musicals in Birmingham and Edinburgh. He's written and recorded albums with several bands as well as a solo artiste and appeared before the Queen mum (RIP).
In this interview I talk to Spoz about his many achievements including the Birmingham Poet Laureateship, his work with bringing poetry to children, and his self written "karaoke" musicals.

Spoz also performs the poems : Vodka Catalyst, Identity Poem, Dying For A Dump In The Car On The Way Back From Cheltenham, Disco Dad and I Met Jesus At St Andrews Football Stadium

You can aslo check out Spoz's Myspace site which has examples of his work.

If you are an artist who is local to Birmingham and would like to record a session or interview please contact me here.

Special Guest Songwriter Aaron Yorke
Aaron is a deeply gifted songwriter who wears his heart on his sleeve.
Very influenced by artists like David Gray and Tom Baxter, his latest album "Taking The Time To Heal" is a mature collection of songs about the human condition. Aaron has the rare ability to share the intimate moments of his life with his audience, through this sharing experience he leads you through some difficult soul searching songs. The process is a rewarding experience for the listener as you come away with a feeling of kinship, that here is someone here who can put into words what you are feeling, who can express a certain moment in your life through his music.
In our conversation at the Midlands Arts Centre on the occasion of his album release, we talk about songwriting, promotion, autism and home recording. Plus from gig Aaron performs When A Relationship Ends and Have You Felt Beautiful Lately. Aaron also has a myspace page.

Special Studio Guest Paul Murpy

This weeks podcast is given over entirely to my special guest Paul Murphy, a singer and songwriter who has been writing and performing over the past four decades. He was born in Belfast and came to England in 1966 as a 16 year-old-with just a guitar and a handful of songs.

From the beginning he was determined to write songs that had integrity and drew on real experience. During those formative early years on the road he hung out with the likes of Lemmy from Motorhead and Van Morrison.

Paul has called Birmingham home for over 30 years and has been a vocal supporter of songwriting and live music in his adopted city. In 1996 he established SongwritersCafe, which for several years provided a valuable showcase for up and coming artists as well as featuring turns from more established acts such as Ocean Colour Scene who invited Paul to support them on an Irish tour.

Until recently Paul has focused almost exclusively on live, intimate performances that allow for his huge capacity for spontaneity. 'On the spot' songs have long been a hallmark of his gigs. So also is spoken word, poetry or talking blues. He says: "The thing with live performance is that like theatre it's in the moment, unique, unchangeable and for a procrastinator like me that is huge liberation."

In this interview Paul talks about his full and varied career in music, from his beginnings in Ireland, coming to England in 66, performing at the Marquee Club, developing his songwriting / poetry skills, setting up the now famous Songwriters Cafe in Birmingham to his present live work, including raucous guest slots with gypsy and klezmer influenced 14 piece band The Destroyers. Paul has recently been working on recording four decades worth of original songs. Here he performs new songs College Square & Hometown, as well as spoken pieces Shoplifters Talking Blues & Dark Road.

You can find more information about Paul at http://www.myspace.com/paulmurphysings & at C21Vox
You can also view a video of Paul performing with the Destroyers on Halloween at Google Video

Homegrown Programme 30 - Special "Bedroom Works"

Jun 3, 2006 50:34

Description:

Music & Poetry from Nic Treadwell

For this edition of Homegrown I have decided to dust off a few of my more mature songs and poems, which have not seen the light of day for some time. All these performances were recorded at Home, and in some cases took more than one take to get down. I think these works serve as a good introduction to my writing and my character. I had a lot of fun recording them and I hope they inspire some kind of reaction now that they are out in the electronic wires. The links below will take you to the song lyrics and poems at my own site. Next week we will be back to our regular eclectic mix of independent music and poetry from around the web.

Music
Tripping
Indian Portrait
Dear
Time Can Really Screw You Up
Sine
Storyville

Poetry
Atmospheres
New Jesus
Time
Silences

Mention in the programme -  Slam Idol Podcast (Please vote for all the poems in the latest competition including me)

David Henry - The Old Breakwater

Mention in the programme -  Flying Shoes Radio hosted by Shaun Belcher

Please vote for my poem PG in the current competition of Slam Idol

Ideas for the programme I'm kicking around a couple of ideas relating to specifically focussing on the process of creating / writing music or poetry. I'm looking at maybe producing an occasional special Homegrown Song Circle whereby we focus on 2 or three artists performing a couple of stripped down versions of songs. The other idea is for a small weekly spotlight on songwriting/music creation with an artist explaining a little about how a piece came to be. Both of these ideas need your contributions to work. If you an artist who has sent stuff into me or planning to send stuff and you have the ability to either record a short audio file about the writing process or drop down an explination in an e-mail then please do. Equally if you have acoustic versions of songs please send those. I will see what the response it like and keep you posted.

Me, Phillip Glass and The Slam Idol Podcast

May 17, 2006

Description:

Yours truely, a man many are now describing as "the one who plays the weird stuff" has just been featured on the one and only Slam Idol Podcast reading my poetry homage to Phillip Glass "PG" I'm apparently contestant no. 4 in contest 11. I'd like to say I'm thrilled to have made it this far, but there really was nothing to it, honestly, just an e-mail to Simon who hosts the podcast. If you haven't herd the Podcast yet please go and have a listen, it's well worth investigating.
Pretty soon myself and 5 real poets will battle it out in a public vote type thing via the Slam Idol website. Even as you read this, I'm getting into shape and I expect you to do the same, at least with your finger that is, in readiness to leap forth, clicking frantically as you vote and rate not only my poem but the others in the contest. For that is how it works. I will let you know when you can vote. In the meantime go listen to Slam Idol....

Welcome to the Homegrown PodCast

Nov 10, 2005

Description:

HomeGrown is a weekly podcast dedicated to new unsigned, unpublished, under-represented independent music, poetry and prose. All material used in the programme is Podcast Friendly , permission being sought from artists to use their material before inclusion. The programme is presented by me, Nic Treadwell, I live in Birmingham UK. I prefer the a laid back kind of late night feel radio, and thats what I am hoping to achieve here. I also aim to make the show personal by adding my own humour and inane observations on life. I want the show to be truely interactive so if you are an artist and have music or prose that you want to expose, please feel free to post them to me. Or point me in the direction of your music mp3 downloads and Ill use them in a future show. If you have poetry or prose and can record yourself reciting it, please also send Mp3's of those. I look forward to receiving your contributions. And I hope you enjoy the programmes.
