D Step Around Johnny

Apr 1, 2016

Description:

Its easy to let the days slip by if you let them. So, here we go... I play this in D with the fiddle cross-tuned ADae. I learned this from a a lot of different recordings. But I guess the one that had the most influence was from a CD by Lydia, Emily, and Claude Martin called “Ten Thousand Miles”. I like the they way she plays the A part. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jc8STrfr69o Slippery-Hill: https://www.slippery-hill.com/recording/step-around-johnny Fiddler's Companion: http://www.ibiblio.org/fiddlers/STE.htm STEP AROUND JOHNNY. Old-Time, Breakdown. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Silberberg (Tunes I Learned at Tractor Tavern), 2002; p. 150. I didn't find anything at DLA. FWIW - According to one source (Dean Barber) who posted a video on YouTube with Tricia Spencer playing the tune: “...comes from Blount County, Ala., about 40 miles north of Birmingham, where I lived for nearly 25 years.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qs8hVdVlweI Again, thanks to Josh Turknett for letting me use his banjo “tune of the week” videos as a background for my fiddle. His video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVxw67bxunc

G Cherry River Line

Feb 18, 2016

Description:

GDgd // I learned this from a recording of Lester McCumbers playing made by Kim Johnson (banjo) in 2006 in Glenville, West Virginia. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q62oT_9La34) And here is Lester talking about where he learned the tune from, a banjo player named Jenes Cottrell. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ay2TR-9xJm I) Kim notes that “as far as I know Lester was the first of the fiddle players to pick up the tune. He and his wife sang quite a few verses to it.” Nothing on DLA, Slippery-Hill, or Fiddler's Companion.

G Cabin Creek

Feb 17, 2016

Description:

Played in G. Fiddle tuned Gdgd. I learned this from another recording from the Lonesome Stragglers CD Susquehanna Waltz. I'm pretty sure Ernie Carpenter is the source for this version. https://www.slippery-hill.com/recording/cabin-creek There are several tunes that go by the name Cabin Creek. And some of those other versions go by other names. Fiddler's Companion is not much help on the version I learned. DLA does not have this version.

DD Camp Meeting On The Forth Of July

Feb 2, 2016

Description:

DDad // I learned this from a Canote Brothers recording that I think was made a public jam session. (https://www.slippery-hill.com/recording/camp-meeting-4th-july) and (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8f7MR_dTOTY) I've heard a lot of versions of this - but I really like the relaxed feel that the Canote Brothers give to the way they play it. It is my favorite version. I have heard it said that the tune comes from Alabama fiddler James Bryan. And at least one story is told (by Dean Barber) - that James learned it from Tommy Jackson - who learned it from Coleman Barwick from Alabama. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78xAS5FKdmg) But James is well know for playing - even if he didn't write it: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDq1uTYlj9Q) Several other little stories, but....

D Moonlight

Jan 29, 2016

Description:

ADae / I learned this from an excellent CD by Martin Fox & Jeff Winegar - "The Way Is Was" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxWy62qiDmA Earliest recording I can find was played by Wallace Thompson in A (recorded by Bruce Greene in 1974. Another recording was made of WT by BG in 1988 that also includes some of the history of the tune (as he knew it): http://dla.acaweb.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/berea/id/1894/rec/3 Supposedly, this is a very old Scottish tune that WT's great -grandmother used to hum to him when he was a child ("...and she was old then") Was also played by Bruce Greene: https://www.slippery-hill.com/recording/moonlight-0 Another nice - more melodic version is by the Snow Hill Strings on "Babe In The Woods": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obGx7CIqJeQ

Old Horse and Buggy

Description:

G Old Yeller Dog ComeTrottin Through The Meetin House

Jan 28, 2016

Description:

GDgd / learned to play this from a recording by the Canote Brothers. There is a lot of lyrics that can be found, so I picked the verses I liked and used the chorus from a YouTube video of an interview that Bob Holt did with Charlie Acuff. Charlie plays and sings the tune. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IyomC16KTo) Charlie says he learned it from his grandfather and figures it went back to a time during or right after the civil war. But since there are a good number of variations to the tune with different names - I'm not sure we can say where or when it really originated. (http://tunearch.org/wiki/Annotation:Old_Yeller_Dog)

Bonaparte's Retreat

Oct 19, 2013

Description:

This recording is from a jam I had with my pal Don Couchie, from East Bay, sitting around our campsite one quiet morning at Clifftop 2012, up on Geezer Hill. This is the classic western version of the tune, based on Pee Wee King's 1950 C&W hit, complete with the third part, often called the "Little Egypt" part, that is sort of frowned upon in some old time circles. Don is fiddling, I believe in DDAD, I am picking my semi-fretless Tubaphone in open D tuning (aDF#AD).

PigAnkle - recorded 1991 - Kirk Hunter- fiddle, David Allen - Banjo, RIchard Chance - Guitar. Learned Pickin' Chickens from a recording of Allen St., as well as from my good friend, Bob Atchison. I learned this unusual version of Grey Eagle from an old timer in Mtn.View during the spring Folk Festival. It is somewhat similar to the transcrition in the Christeson's "Old Time Fiddler's Repertoire." I can't believe 1991 was THAT long ago!!

Turkey in the Straw

Nov 8, 2008

Description:

As common as dirt, or turkey on the table at Thanksgiving, but I love it. Great tune for Sawshuffle and Syncoshuffle. Samson R11 catching the bottom plate sounds, the Heil PR35 catching the top plate, but no preamp. Sounds good, but a little thinner than with the Behringer tube mic preamp used on Old Dan Tucker.

Oh Death & Glory in the Meetinghouse

Feb 5, 2008

Description:

While this is not the last time I will try recording this song and tune, it's what I did a few years ago. I like the idea of singing acappella at different times in the song though those times are not set in stone. O Death is adapted from Dock Boggs banjo version and Glory in the Meeting House is from Luther Strong. The fiddle is tuned EDAE (a tuning which I think works much better than standard for those who have adapted fiddle versions of Hobart Smith's banjo tune "Last Chance").
