Going to the Wedding to Get Some Cake (TOTW)

Feb 4, 2018

Description:

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 2/2/18, this rare tune comes from the 1930 recording of Mississippi fiddler Alvis Massengale who played with the Newton County Hillbillies. It has some similarity to Going to the Wedding, Sally Ann, Great Big Taters in Sandy Land, and Mississippi Square Dance. I liked how the B part went and have used that fingering in its 4th measure for several unrelated tunes. For tab see the current TOTW.

Stephen

Jan 4, 2018

Description:

Tony Ellis and Stephen Wade are good friends, with Stephen having produced at least one of Tony's CDs. The tune "Stephen" I understand was written for him by Tony. It's another beauty. It uses syncopation in the last parts, which is something I understand Tony learned about from Earl Scruggs. I hope to learn more from Tony himself about these tunes and am researching one for a future old-time Tune of the Week. The tuning I used isn't the one Tony composed with, as I hear a higher 5th string than I'm using. Soon I'll have Tony's tab book and perhaps will see first hand how he arranged Stephen, as well as several others I've worked on. I think it's okay to adapt a tune in an inventive way and it's more fun than memorizing somebody else's playing. Do you agree?

Tom Dooley?

Dec 9, 2017

Description:

Hey folks! I have been learning Banjo for about a year now with the end goal of having an extension of myself with which to express myself fully in ways that words cannot. In other words, I want to speak fluently through my banjo. I am entirely self taught, but have had a deep passion for folk music around the world my entire life, and a special place in my heart for Appalachian folk music. I am posting this here with the hope that you guys would offer me any advice, any criticisms, literally anything at all that you think may help me out. Don't hold back guys.

Carolan's Concerto - from 20 O'Carolan Irish Classics (Celtic fingerstyle)

Nov 29, 2017

Description:

This classic piece by the blind harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738) is perfect for Celtic fingerstyle banjo. It's a popular session tune, played with reverence for the last of the Irish harper-composers. The "clairseach" or Irish harp was tuned diatonically and had metal wire for strings, usually made of brass, silver, gold or a silver-gold alloy. With gratitude to Mel Bay, here's a play-along-track from my fourth book/audio download, 20 O'Carolan Irish Classics for 5-String Banjo and All Instruments - find it here: https://www.melbay.com/Products/21599M/20-ocarolan-irish-classics.aspx
