It has been about 2 months since I learned the tune and my band has been playing it. Here is a recording of how it has developed from this week's jam session at the house. 5 fiddlers, one guitar and one bass. No banjo as George is north for the summer avoiding the Tucson heat!

Trouble on My Mind (TOTW)

Jun 9, 2018

Description:

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 6/8/18, Trouble on My Mind was recorded by Kentucky fiddler John Salyer's sons at home. Salyer never recorded commercially, but was an excellent fiddler. This tune is crooked in the last measure when it repeats and is unusual in having six measures in the A part and eight in the B part.

Last Shot Got Him

May 12, 2018

Description:

Uploaded for the Old Time Tune of the Week for May 11, 2018. From the Mississippi Possum Hunters, whose 1930 recording was a sort of homage to Mississippi John Hurt.

Last Shot Got Him (TOTW) (open C tuning)

May 11, 2018

Description:

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 5/11/18, Last Shot Got Him via the Mississippi Possum Hunters' 1930 recording. It resembles in melody Mississippi John Hurt's sung version called First Shot Missed Him. Hurt recorded as early as 1928, though this song isn't available to hear until a much later recording in the 60's. Hurt played it slower and didn't have the little tag ending on the A part. Music historian and fiddler Harry Bolick put the two together (see the current TOTW to hear that version). I think the Possum Hunters sound rather ragtime and I can imagine it being at one time a bar-room song about someone who was shot, an event not unheard of at that time in that place in Mississippi.

Last Shot Got Him

May 11, 2018

Description:

In gCGce. I've been obsessed with this tune played on the banjo, since playing with my friend Barbara last summer. I have played the tune on the fiddle, for years, but not on the banjo. Influenced by the recording of the Mississippi Possum Hunters https://www.slippery-hill.com/recording/last-shot-got-him

Last Shot Got Him - Hobo Pie

May 10, 2018

Description:

This version was recorded by Hobo Pie in 2000. Barbara Johnson and Carl Baron: fiddles, Ray Frick: banjo (gCGce), Bob Woodcock: guitar. From CD "We Might as Well be Dead". <http://topflac.com/38944-hobo-pie-we-might-as-well-be-dead.html>. Source recording Mississippi Possum Hunters. In the key of C.

Elkins

May 10, 2018

Description:

A multitrack recording using a Tascam multitrack recorder, a very slow, lazy and very simplified version of Larry Unger's tune "Elkins." Enoch 12" Tradesman (stuffed with a small towel at neck joint) playing lead in Double D, Martin HD-28 guitar on rhythm, Cloud Nine Marimbula on bass (use headphones/earbuds/other good speakers to pick up the sound), H. Luger CV-300 fiddle also playing some lead. This is certainly not a note-for-note accurate banjo version of Larry Unger's excellent tune, nor as good a version as Jason White's on YouTube (which is outstanding as he compares it being played on five different banjos), but I have attempted to capture much of the essence of the tune as I hear it.

Barlow Knife (TOTW)

Apr 28, 2018

Description:

For the old time Tune of the Week, 4/28/18, the first part of this medley comes from BHO member RG, learned (he thinks) from a wonderful friend, Larry Brown. The second part is how I think traditionally of Barlow Knife in three parts. My dad didn't have a barlow knife, but his boy scout knife reminded me of one.

Old Rip

Apr 10, 2018

Description:

A multitrack recording of my slow and simple version of this Lynn Morris tune, where I'm playing clawhammer banjo (Enoch 12" Tradesman with Rickard Dobson tone ring, Double D), fiddle (low G tuned up to A), guitar (Martin HD-28), and bass. This version is more Old Time. As is always the case, better headphones/earbuds/speakers will do a better job of picking up the bass. Dedicated to an old high school friend (T. O'G.) of mine, who was among my first "guitar/folk bandmates" and who unfortunately passed away all to soon last year.

Tally Ho (TOTW)

Apr 6, 2018

Description:

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 4/6/18, Blanche Coldiron comes fully to my attention -- a Kentucky musician who lived the rural life of work and generosity and leaves a quiet legacy that we come to know after her passing. Tally Ho is a 4-part tune that builds up to a gallant descending end. I'm playing this in double C tuning on a Mac Traynham Whyte Laydie openback.

Magpie (TFTL)

Apr 2, 2018

Description:

My first recorded foray into 2-finger picking. Learned finger-picking styles many years ago, but never quite got over the hump with any of them. Pushing myself this year to do so. Magpie is TOTW for March 30, 2018, and I know the tune pretty well in clawhammer style so I figured I would give a shot in TFTL. I'm still working on a lot aspects of finger-picking (even pinches, smooth/even tone, timing) but I thought this was good enough to post as a first attempt without totally embarassing myself. Banjo is tuned gEADE ("Sandy River Belle tuning"). I'm excited to actually be breaking my barrier and doing this. More to come, and even better stuff, I hope.

Susannah Gal (TOTW)

Mar 24, 2018

Description:

For the old-time Tune of the Week, March 23, 2018. Susannah Gal goes by other titles. This one comes from the duet CD of Tommy Jarrell and Fred Cockerham, both from the Round Peak, NC region. Their B part is unique, but they play it together and so it sounds great. Fred adds slides which I attempted to include, too. They must have had lots of fun playing together!

Mar 13, 2018

Description:

Janet Burton and I got to talking and decided we needed to collaborate on a tune, so this is what came out. I recorded my track, sent it to Janet, then she added in her tracks. We are playing in the key of C. I am playing lead on an Enoch Dobson (gCGCD), and Janet is playing backup on her Gold Tone cello banjo and harmony (starts half we through) on her Gold Tone mini "Plucky. Janet tuned both her banjos to open G (gDGBD).

Jimmy in the Swamp (TOTW)

Mar 9, 2018

Description:

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 3/9/18, Jimmy in the Swamp comes from the fiddle playing of Nebraska great Bob Walters. It's in the key of G and I'm playing in guitar tuning gDGBE. Most banjo players play it in G tuning.

Yellow Cat (TOTW)

Feb 24, 2018

Description:

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 2/23/18, this version comes from Earl Collins, Missouri fiddler who moved to LA. He was at my guitar teacher's house one night for a jam and he encouraged me greatly as a budding banjo playing college student. My guitar teacher really got around -- Mary Ellen Clark just turned 90 and still plays and dances a bit. She taught me The Cat Came Back, which was about a yellow cat.

Three Thin Dimes (TOTW)

Jan 13, 2018

Description:

For the old-time Tune of the Week, this is a three part tune from Ohio which reminds me a bit of Devil's Dream. I play it clawhammer style melodically and can see it eventually becoming more rhythmic and less notey. But here it is for now, from the original recording on Slippery Hill by Ohio fiddler John Hutchison who learned it from his father who learned it from another fiddler.

Walking Up Georgia Row

Jan 13, 2018

Description:

Katy, Fetch the Soap Home (TOTW)

Jan 9, 2018

Description:

From the playing of Kentucky fiddler, Estill Bingham (1899 - 1990), this old-time Tune of the Week is a nice, but rare tune, learned from his father Noah Bingham. Bruce Green first recorded him and there's a nice photo of him if you have the Jeff Titon book called Old-Time Kentucky Fiddle Tunes. He died at age 91 in an accident while walking to work.

Woodchuck in the Deadnin'

Jan 7, 2018

Description:

I picked up this tune from a recording by the Corn Potato String Band. I think it sources to Jim Smoak & the Louisiana Honeydrippers, who also recorded it. Banjo is tuned aEAC#E. What's a deadnin' (I had to look it up too)? It's an archaic term used by early settlers to describe a spot in a densely forested area where the trees have died and the spot can be used as farm land. Generally, white settlers would girdle the trees to kill them, rather the cut them down. At least, this is what I have gathered from reading some old sources.

Dec 31, 2017

Description:

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 12/29/17, this originally was recorded in 1949 by John Sharp, a Kentucky native living in Tennessee. It has resemblance to both Polly Wolly Doodle and a bit of Old Joe Clark. My arrangement comes from the Canote Brothers.

Dec 25, 2017

Description:

From the Bottomlanders via Garry Harrison, who comments 'This one comes from a couple of fellas down in Old Shawnee Town, down on the Ohio River side of Illinois, way down at the south tip (Gallitan Co.) They played the fiddle and banjo, Vince Uselton played the banjo and Ed Bradley played the fiddle and they called themselves The Bottomlanders and once again they didn?t have any name for it so we called it the Gallitan Special'.

Fox Hunter's Reel

Dec 20, 2017

Description:

As played on fiddle by banjo Bluegrass Boy Tony Ellis. Retiring from Bill Monroe's band in 1962, Tony now enjoys most fiddling with fiddles in his shop in his Ohio home. When I contacted him about his favorite tunes and what to learn, he didn't recommend this traditional Irish tune, Fox Chase Reel. Here it is anyway, and next will come more of his recommended original tunes.

Flying Indian version 2

Dec 19, 2017

Description:

A second rendition of this tune played on the same, fretless Frog Banjo as version 1, but here the wooden brace has been removed and a new skin has been mounted. The new skin is thicker, and has been treated with Titebond lll waterproof glue. I play through the tune once using up-picking, and again using frailing. Listen to version 1 and compare.

Frog 2 Flying Indian version 1

Dec 19, 2017

Description:

Fretless Frog Banjo, tackhead with "gourd" made from recycled paper and glue. This version has a thin wood brace underneath the skin at the bridge. See also version 2 with the brace removed. I play through the piece once using up-picking, then switch to frailing for 2nd time through.

Five Miles from Town

Dec 18, 2017

Description:

From the fiddling of Kentuckian Clyde Davenport -- one never can get tired of his style or tunes. This one has those little unexpected twists in meter and melody that delight us. I'm in good company with Joe Newberry and Don Borchelt who both uploaded this tune on BHO years ago. Jeff Titon claims it's related to an Irish tune called The Mullingar Races and that other tunes with different melody have been recorded with this title.

Wes Muir's Tune (TOTW)

Dec 17, 2017

Description:

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 12/15/17, Wes Muir learned this during the Civil War era. Missouri fiddler Nile Wilson (1912 - 2008) passed the tune on. He learned at a young age to play fiddle from his grandfathers and father. He plays at a fast dance tempo and I can imagine this tune as a polka, though it's said Mr. Wilson's favorite tunes were for square dances.

Carter Country

Whistlebee (TOTW)

Dec 10, 2017

Description:

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 12-8-17, a 1924 fiddle recording of Dr. D.D. Hollis produced 12 recordings. I find Whistlebee an odd name and it has odd timing, too. The tune has been recorded with little resemblance to the source fiddler and it's hard to say why. It's fun to play and has a busyness to it that might resemble a bee.

Old Christmas Morning (French Carpenter) (TOTW)

Dec 3, 2017

Description:

This archaic tune has more than one related version, but this week's old-time Tune of the Week for 12/1/17 focuses on West Virginian fiddler French Carpenter (1905 -1965). I now know why January 6 is also celebrated as Christmas, or "Old Christmas," as the English calendar was changed in 1752 and 12 days were left out, bringing December 25th to January 6th. Learn something new every day....

A little tune I composed and recorded yesterday. I only started to learn clawhammer style banjo a week ago, so it is rough and full of mistakes. But, I am having so much fun and loving every minute of it, I just had to post it!! It was recorded using my new (2007) Jason Romero banjo and my Martin D-18 for the guitar.

Rain on the Water

Nov 29, 2017

Description:

Another one of Tony Ellis' lovely 3/4 time original tunes. The cascading notes remind me of falling water. Though Tony plays 3-finger picking, I play it clawhammer style. The sound of Tony's music is that of old-time, though he was an excellent Bluegrass Boy banjo player for Bill Monroe in 1960 - 1962. His grandmother frailed a banjo and Tony says his re-tuning the banjo to double C reminded him of what he heard her play when he was young.

Georgia Railroad (TOTW)

Nov 6, 2017

Description:

For the old-time Tune of the Week, Nov. 3, 2017, Georgia Railroad was popularized by Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers in the 1920's. It's been recorded many times since, sometimes with silly lyrics, which I like. The first version I heard was actually Adam Hurt's upbeat fiddle version on his new CD Artifacts. I combine three versions here, one from Riley Puckett, who sang and played guitar on the original recording, one from Adam, and one other related tune recorded by Fiddlin' John Carson and recently by Harry Bolick called Way Late Last Night When Peter Went a-Fishing.

This traditional song is one dear to my heart, the old-time Tune of the Week for 10/27/17, also called I Gave My Love a Cherry. Since the poster, Cyndy, did such a beautiful job in open G tuning I thought to look for another tuning to try and found bDGAD. It's listed as "A Tony Trischka D/G tuning" in the Anita Kermode list of tunings I like referring to. Funny, but my 5th string didn't like being tuned down that low. It get tuning itself back up! I think it gives the song an old-time mountain feeling, which is good, since it was an old English song brought to Appalachia by settlers.

Salt Sack Behind the Door (TOTW)

Oct 22, 2017

An obscure tune for the old-time Tune of the Week, 10/20/17, this tune probably resembles well the style of Israel Welch, WV fiddler and multi-instrumentalist. Brothers Tom and Israel Welch were still alive in the 1980's and could still play outstanding dance music.

Medley: Staten Island Hornpipe/Folding Down the Sheets/Pagosa Hornpipe

Oct 19, 2017

Description:

It is a beautiful fall day in the Front Range of Colorado. Sitting on my back patio, I can see blue sky stretching from the plains to over the foothills of the Rockies. The giant cottonwoods in my neighborhood have turned golden yellow, and the ashes are wine red. I had a wonderful breakfast with my wife this morning in town. We strolled along Clear Creek, and lingered on a park bench musing on life's strange twists and the challenges of more youthful days. I am 65 today, and am overjoyed to be here, still kicking, still playing my banjo, and still with so much music in my heart. This is my tribute to the day, warts and all, just as life is.

Oct 15, 2017

Description:

As played by Ozark fiddler, Cecil Snow, this is the old-time Tune of the Week for October 13, 2017. It's called a hoedown and its style is compared to Texas swing style with slurred notes. Polecat's Den

Sep 30, 2017

Description:

This tune was once a TOTW back in 2012, but I'm just getting around to it. I once had a polecat (i.e. a ferret) visit the classroom one day and I'll try to dig out photos. I recall the owner said he didn't have a permit for it, so mum's the word... When Clyde Davenport sings "ain't goin' there no more" I'm not sure what he's referring to as a polecat's den. Don't enlighten me unless it's gentle! The tune is catchy, beginning on a IV chord, in this case a G chordal sound when the tune is in C. Mr. Davenport (who I think is in his 90's now) played it greatly on banjo, though he's known more for his fiddling. If you play it still in jams, like RG did when it was TOTW, let me know, please.

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 9/15/17, Clyde Davenport, wonderfully smooth Kentucky fiddler, learned this from his father Will who learned it from their neighbor, elder fiddler Will Phipps (b. 1829). It has a modal sound, so I arranged it in sawmill tuning.

Gone Indian (TOTW)

Sep 9, 2017

Description:

From the playing of the great Texan fiddler Bob Wills and for the old-time Tune of the Week, 9/8/17, it's a treat to have this tune with our old-time repertoire. Mac Benford plays it on banjo and that's good enough for me! The band leader I worked with for 14 years played steel-pedal at one time and his love for Bob Wills showed. He had us learning some of his instrumentals over the years, so here's one I can show him. :)

Sep 2, 2017

Description:

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 9-1-17, from the mandolin playing of Alabaman Sam Taylor. I played this a bit differently than usual, avoiding extra notes and bass notes that seemed to slap, and also used more slides than I usually do. Johnny was laid-back, I guess, probably due to overworking in the excessive heat.

This old-time Tune of the Week for 8/11/17 reminds us in melody of some other traditional songs, such as Gotta Travel On and even Worried Man Blues. The Monroe Brothers recorded this as their first ever recording in 1936 and Bill said that it was commonly sung in Kentucky at the time.

Molly Sue

Aug 9, 2017

Description:

Kentucky banjo picker, Jim Reed, was posting for a while on BHO video after video, truly enchanting us with his soft, fluent, melodious 3-finger style. Molly Sue is one of his originals (which he could write instantaneously at will) which is also on his only CD. I learned it yesterday, thinking it has that descending scale (in the A part) I'm looking for and recently posted about on a Sound Off! thread called Kentucky modal tunes. I really think there's a parallel with some Native American music. Kentucky was full of Cherokee Indians at one time. Somehow their traditional music, especially as played on flute, has slipped into our modern mountains. Can it be?

Winds of Shiloh

Aug 8, 2017

Description:

J.P. Fraley is one of my favorite fiddlers and this is one of his few original compositions. I learned Winds of Shiloh last year and am re-visiting now, thinking it reminded me of another original Kentucky tune recently learned called Foxfire, by Owen "Snake" Chapman. Both melodies sound like there's Native American influence -- I think of the many Cherokees who used to live in those mountains and wonder how much musical interaction occurred. Kentucky tune writers have often amazed me in the delicacy and musical beauty they create. BHO member Jim Reed comes to mind. He'd write a tune at the drop of a hat and they'd all be winners to my ears, worth pursuing on my banjo.

Description:

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 8/4/17, West Virginia fiddler Delbert Hughes (1905 -1982) recorded this one. It sounds like Davy is responding in the B part with his grievances, which he finds reasonable enough. I think this story ends where he comes back home....

Jackson's Hornpipe

Aug 2, 2017

Description:

I posted another Tommy Jackson tune unknowingly the other day..."Snowflake Reel". JanetB was kind enough to give me some background on the tune and add a very nice clawhammer arrangement. This led to us trading messages about a collaberation of another Jackson tune. It was a bit different for us both. Not too bad for a first time collab...she plays the cello banjo and gracefully states the melody and I come in later like an overexcited 2nd time beginner ('cause it's what I am!) and barrel through the changes again with Janet's accompaniment. My ending is a little exaggerated, but it was good fun, and I hope to do another soon. Thanks Janet for your nice playing and your use of the garage band software.

Napoleon Crossing the Alps

Jul 23, 2017

Description:

Napoleon Crossing the Alps is a tune with several names I've wanted to learn for a while. One of them is Bonaparte Crossing the Rockies. This recording has two parts -- the first is in SRB tuning (f#DGF#D tuned up a step) and the second is open G tuning. Adam Hurt taught me that G tunes can often be played well and sound good in the tuning he calls SRB, or Sandy River Belle. Perhaps you'll notice no difference in the two versions, also played on two different banjos, with cello banjo accompaniment.

In the recording he's accompanied by 3-finger picker Paul David Smith, who passed away a few years ago. My arrangement is clawhammered on my new small-scale Doc's Banjo, which I can't seem to put down. :)

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 7/7/17 Lazy Kate was recorded at the beginning of the 1930's buy a Mississippi stringband called Leake County Revelers. In the key of D, I put it in what's equivalent to open G tuning on the cello banjo (dADF#A). For an easy-sounding tune, it was a bit challenging to arrange, but easier for me to play than in double D tuning. Easier playing makes for a better end-result, don't you think?!
