This is a fascinating time we are living in. We can’t control what’s happening in the world around us, but we can control the perspective in which we view what’s happening. We can choose to look at it through the perspective of anxiousness and fear, or we can choose to look at it through the perspective of opportunity. In this episode, I walk through multiple different ways in which we can shine light on this commonly perceived dark time.

Dr. Paul Saladino: Returning to Our Ancestral Diet with The Carnivore Code

Mar 2, 2020 01:13:00

“Animal foods are clearly superior to plant foods in every way, shape, and form.” Do you agree with this statement? My guess is no. But if we all agreed on the same things, the world would be a very boring place. Regardless of your beliefs, it’s extremely important to explore all the different perspectives to gain a clearer understanding and deepen our beliefs.     In this episode of the Align podcast, I'm joined by guest Dr. Paul Saladino, MD, who dives into the topic of the Carnivore Diet based off his new book, The Carnivore Code. If you have listened to a podcast on the Carnivore Diet before, trust me when I say this episode is unique. I asked Dr. Saladino challenging questions that provides you with information you have never heard on a podcast before.      He gives an in-depth explanation as to why he believes eating animal foods, from animal meat, animal organs, and animal fats, are the richest source of nutrition. Most likely, you’ve been led to believe plant-based diets is the healthiest diet to live by. He demystifies this myth and gives you a step-by-step guide on beginning the carnivore diet.      It’s very important to note, I don’t have a firm stance in what I believe is the best diet for optimal living. Please keep in mind that this episode is not a reflection of my personal perspective on nutrition. I enjoy standing on the side lines and watching the world leading health experts tee off on what they think is best.

Plant-Based vs. Animal-Based Diets with Dr. Joel Kahn

Jan 27, 2020 51:11

In this episode of the Align podcast, I have a not so conventional conversation with Dr. Joel Kahn on plant-based nutrition. At his core, Dr. Joel Kahn believes that plant-based nutrition is the most powerful source of preventative medicine on the planet. Although, the two of us dive into the precautions vegans need to take when eliminating animal products from their diet long-term.    Having practiced traditional cardiology since 1983, it was only after Dr. Kahn’s own commitment to a plant based vegan diet that he truly began to delve into the realm of non-traditional diagnostic tools, prevention tactics and nutrition-based recovery protocols. These ideologies led him to change his approach and focus on being a holistic cardiologist. Sharing many of these ideologies in this episode, Dr. Kahn educates us on plant-based nutrition in a refreshingly non-biased light.    What you’ll learn:  Vitamin deficiencies in a plant-based diet Breaking the myth of protein deficiency How meat is degenerative for the body Environmental affects of vegetables vs. meat Biochemical affects of a plant-based diet  How studies vegan and non-vegan diets are skewed How to recognize whether or not a specific diet is right for you A new syndrome: Red Meat allergy  Getting ketotic on plants only  Keto-friendly beans  How your microbiome changes when you take meat out of your diet Effects of plaque build-up in the body  The type of exercise the human body is built for    Find more from Dr. Joel Kahn   Website: https://www.drjoelkahn.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drjkahn

Benefits of Sitting on the Floor and How to Do It Properly

Jan 16, 2020 13:30

If you’re someone who is striving to be proactive with their health, tune into this episode of the Align Podcast to learn more about floor sitting – one of the simplest things you can do to increase your vitality and longevity.

Our hips, ankles, knees, spines, and the fluids throughout our body have been built upon movement, necessitated by getting up and down off the ground. Although in western societies, floor sitting is not a staple in our lifestyle.

So here is where the problem lies…our body is like a home.  If we make good use of the space, squatters will take over. Inside the body, the squatters will look like adhesions, calcifications, and inflammation. But, when we move our body through its full range of motion regularly, in ways it’s intended to be moved, we prevent the “squatters” from taking over.  And when our knees, ankles, and hips can smoothly move through their full range of motion, it’s a clear indication of the vitality of the rest of our body.

In this episode I discuss:

How floor sitting will improve your life Studies backing up the benefits of floor sitting The affect floor sitting has had on different cultures  How to include more floor sitting in your daily life  How to sit on the floor properly How much time should be spent on the floor daily to reap the benefits

Dr. Perlmutter: Detoxing Your Mind for Better Decision Making, Lasting Happiness and Weight Loss

Jan 13, 2020 53:16

In this episode of the Align Podcast, I’m joined by Dr. Perlmutter, world-renowned, board-certified neurologist and four-time New York Times bestselling author. The two of us dive into one of the most important topics we could discuss in this day and age: detoxing our mind.    With the amount of technology, social media, and toxic foods we are exposed to daily, and our lack of exposure to nature, our minds are constantly being manipulated. All these pose serious risks to our physical and mental health, relationships, and even our ability to control our own thoughts. Plus, we find ourselves more lonely, anxious, depressed, distrustful, illness-prone, and overweight than ever before.    Dr. Perlmutter refers to this as disconnection syndrome, which is caused by our modern lives pushing us into separating from our wellness, health and joy. Dr. Perlmutter walks us through the different elements associated with this syndrome and provides us with practical ways to break the cycle. To learn more, be sure to check out his new book, Brain Wash.    What you’ll learn:  The negative effects of technology and social media have on your brain and happiness How lack of sleep negatively effects your decision making and causes unwanted weight gain Scientific evidence proving the power of meditation  The importance of nature and simple hacks for incorporating more into your life The importance of re-evaluating your priorities and how you spend your time A step-by-step guide for making your time spend online a healthy experience How processed foods rewires are brain effects our decision making The basics rules of eating for detoxify your mind    Highlights from Dr. Perlmutter:  “Everyone wants to live a long and healthy life, and has the information, but the problem lies in making the choice to live a healthy life. The ability to make that choice has been taken from us. It’s widely known that our eyeballs are being manipulated when we are online but what’s not as clear is how our diets have been manipulated. The addition of sugar, salt, and low-quality fat makes these foods more addictive by literally rewiring our brain. This rewiring affects our decision making, which locks us into making the decision to continue to consume these foods over and over again.”

“Stress is a sure-fire way to lock yourself into your amygdala, the “fear-based” center of your brain, and block you from the pre-frontal cortex, the part of your brain that allows you to make better decisions, experience empathy, participate in life and plan for the future. So what’s the opposite of stress? No stress. And how do you make that happen? It’s simple: Meditation. If you look at functional MRI scans of those who meditate, you’ll find that their prefrontal cortex is lit up like a Christmas tree. Plus, that activity continues to persist, even when you are done meditating for the day. And that is exactly what we are trying to accomplish.”    “One night of not getting enough sleep drastically effects decision making the following day, triggering us to be more impulsive and make the wrong decisions with food. If you draw that out over time, you will find people who routinely do not get enough restorative sleep, consume as much as 350 extra calories a day, without equally increasing the energy expenditure. Which means, 10 days of under sleeping equals one pound of gained body fat. Play that out over a few years and no wonder people get into trouble.”   Find more from Dr. Perlmutter:    Instagram: @davidperlmutter Twitter: @davidperlmutter Facebook: @davidperlmutter Youtube: DavidPerlmutterMD Website: drperlmutter.com Book: Brain Wash

Jan 6, 2020 01:12:33

We live our lives in boxes–going from our box house, to our box car, to our box office, just to go back to our box house. The boxes our society and culture have created for us cause us to live with such seriousness. Rarely do we move our bodies naturally and rarely do we allow ourselves to just be silly. It’s this seriousness and lack of natural movement that robs us of our health and happiness, and decreases the quality of our lives.

In this episode of the Align Podcast, JP Spears and I have a conversation about how making simple changes like correcting our posture, being more playful and paying attention to our breath is the secret to our healing.

JP Sears is a YouTuber, comedian, emotional healing coach, author, speaker, world traveler, and curious student of life.  He is dedicated to empowering people to live more meaningful lives, as well as encouraging healing and growth through his humorous and entertainingly informative videos.

BOOK HIGHLIGHTS: Paul Arden (Experimental Ep. 168)

May 4, 2018 11:00

Experimental episode digging into the highlights I've gathered from Paul Arden's book, 'Whatever You Think, Think The Opposite'

We go into 4 KEY takeaways for you to ponder on this week...

Purchase Book on Amazon

The bestselling author of "It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want To Be" Paul Arden turns logic and common sense on its head in "Whatever You Think, Think the Opposite "and gives you the confidence to take bigger risks and enjoy your work more than you can imagine. Have you ever considered the extraordinary power of making bad decisions, being unreasonable, and taking dangerous, unadvisable risks? Has it ever occurred to you that nothing is more dangerous than playing it safe, or that the straight and narrow path may lead you right off a cliff? Paul Arden has become a global business guru on the strength of such radical insights. His first book, "It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want to Be", became a word of mouth classic, selling more than half a million copies. Instead of the usual boring advice, he offered daring quips, aphorisms, and paradoxes - all seeking to revise what we habitually hold as our 'common sense'. "Whatever You Think, Think the Opposite" is an even more daring attack on the way we look at our work and our world.

Michele Paradise: Supreme Communication, Body Language, NLP | Ep. 151

Jan 23, 2018 01:04:30

Michele is an international speaker and coach and am now working with Deepak Chopra as a Wellness Expert on his new digital platform jiyo.com.   I have 15 years experience working with people from all walks of life who want to make changes in their lives but are still stuck after trying  just about every other option. I work quickly and economically to get you the results you want and need so that you can move forward with your life.

Before I began helping people to make profound and lasting changes in their lives. I was an international runway model. You're probably wondering how I made such an extreme life change. When I was a model I suffered from anorexia nervosa and there were very few people around who knew how to help me and my colleagues who were also suffering, so I embarked on a journey to figure out what I could do to free myself from the 'monkey on my back'. I did a lot of reading and self-development and learned a lot along the way. Some good some not so good. I was always interested in human behavior and at that moment realized that I wanted to help others get the 'monkey off their back'. After years of studying several methodologies such as NLP, Hypnotherapy and Havening Techniques, I had the tools to make a difference in people's lives with their weight, anxiety, stress, trauma and any other issue that was holding them back.

Little bit about Ben; he was accepted into six medical schools, but opted to instead attain a master’s degree in exercise physiology and biomechanics, after which, in 2005, he leapt hardcore into the fitness world, partnering with physicians and opening a series of personal training studios, gyms and physiology and biomechanics labs across North Idaho and Eastern Washington, and eventually being voted as America’s top personal trainer in 2008.

While building his empire in the brick-and-mortar fitness industry, Ben competed as one of the top ranked amateur triathletes in the world, completing over 120 races and 12 Ironman triathlons while racing for the elite Team Timex multisport team, winning gold medal for the USA in long course triathlon, and leading squads of swim, bike and run enthusiasts in guided adventures through Hawaii, Thailand, Japan and beyond.

Eventually, Ben became the father of twin sons and pivoted into media, writing, speaking and consulting, launching one of the world’s first fitness podcasts, becoming a New York Times bestselling author of “Beyond Training” and 13 books, designing and creating the Christian Gratitude Journal , and starting a blog that now reaches over a million rabid fans each month. Dr. Mercola: Home Biology, Improved Cognition, Structured Water | Ep. 146

Dec 19, 2017 51:55

Hopefully you know Dr. Mercola by now.

First and foremost he is an osteopathic physician, also known as a DO. DOs are licensed physicians who, similar to MDs, can prescribe medication and perform surgery in all 50 states. DOs and MDs have similar training requiring four years of study in the basic and clinical sciences, and the successful completion of licensing exams. But DOs bring something extra to the practice of medicine. Osteopathic physicians practice a "whole person" approach, treating the entire person rather than just symptoms. Focusing on preventive health care, DOs help patients develop attitudes and lifestyles that don't just fight illness, but help prevent it, too.

His website, http://www.mercola.com/ is one of the most popular websites on the internet for your optimal health related question.

It was a special honor to bring his perspectives to ALIGN!

Dr. Andy Galpin: Debunking Muscle Myths, Rules of Strength, Hazards of Quantified-Self | Ep. 140

Nov 7, 2017 01:27:37

Andy is a tenured Professor in the Center for Sport Performance at CSU Fullerton. He was born and raised in beautiful Rochester, WA and is a die-hard Seahawks, Huskies, & Mariner fan. RIP Sonics. As a youth, Andy played every sport at his disposal, excelling at Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Track & Field. While not playing, he worked at grocery stores, gas stations, hay fields, blueberry farms, and in the road construction business. It was during this time he discovered Strength & Conditioning.

Andy took his limited talents to Linfield College to join their Football team and pursue a degree in Exercise Science. While he experienced great success in both (2004 National Championship and 2x Captain and immediate inductee into the "All Ugly" Team), the true reward of this time was the meeting of lifelong friend (Doug Larson). The two fed each other's pursuit of knowledge of human performance and led them to attend the University of Memphis for the Masters degrees in Human Movement Sciences. A bit of luck and excellent faculty mentoring led Doug and Andy to meet Mike Bledsoe and the man formally known as "Barbell Buddha" Chris Moore - all of which later led to the creation of the #1 Health & Fitness Podcast in the world Barbell Shrugged. It also marked the start of Andy's competitive Weightlifting (culminating in his 7th Place finish in the 2007 National Championships), Mixed Martial Arts, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu careers.

Esther Gokhale II: Body Reading, Tribal Butt Cheeks, Heal Your Back | Ep. 139

Oct 31, 2017 48:21

Esther Gokhale (Go-clay) has been involved in integrative therapies all her life. As a young girl growing up in India, she helped her mother, a nurse, treat abandoned babies waiting to be adopted. This early interest in healing led her to study biochemistry at Harvard and Princeton and, later, acupuncture at the San Francisco School of Oriental Medicine.

After experiencing crippling back pain during her first pregnancy and unsuccessful back surgery, Gokhale began her lifelong crusade to vanquish back pain. Her studies at the Aplomb® Institute in Paris and years of research in Brazil, India, Portugal and elsewhere led her to develop the Gokhale Method, a unique, systematic approach to help people find their bodies’ way back to pain-free living.

Gokhale practiced acupuncture and taught posture, dance, and yoga in her Palo Alto wellness center for over twenty years. The Gokhale Method continues to grow as qualified Gokhale Method teachers now teach the method worldwide.

Gokhale's book, 8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back, has sold over 100,000 copies and has been translated into eight languages. In 2010, Gokhale hosted the nationally televised program Back Pain: The Primal Posture Solution (available on DVD).

Gokhale has taught at corporations such as Google, IDEO, Varian Medical Systems, and Facebook Inc. She has also presented at conferences including TEDx(Stanford), Ancestral Health Symposium, Weston Price Foundation Conference, and PrimalCon.  She continues to speak with physician groups including Stanford, PAMF, UCSF and has consulted for the trainers of the SF 49ers and several Stanford sports teams.

In May 2013, The New York Times featured Esther in an article giving her the title, “The Posture Guru of Silicon Valley”.

Esther Gokhale lives on Stanford University campus where she raised three children with her husband Brian White, chairman of the Math Department.

Jay Ferruggia: Body Transformation, 80:20 Principle, Relationship Building | Ep. 138

Oct 23, 2017 01:01:36

I’m Jay Ferruggia, and I’ve been helping guys become the strongest version of themselves since 1994.

You may have seen my work in Men’s Health, Muscle & Fitness, Maximum Fitness, Men’s Fitness, Fast Company, Huffington Post, LiveStrong, Muscle & Fitness Hers, Shape, Entrepreneur, Details or on ESPN or CBS.

You know how group training is the big thing these days? I was doing that in the mid 90’s.

The hardcore, underground warehouse gyms that are so popular nowadays? I had one of those back in ’96.

Training like an athlete? Flipping tires, dragging sleds, pressing logs, using rings? Been doing that for 20+ years with my clients. Long before it was popular or on TV commercials.

What you may not know is that I have struggled with all of the issues I discuss on this site.

Over the course of my life I’ve been physically and mentally weak, skinny, fat, sad, depressed, insecure, painfully shy, socially awkward, crippled with anxiety and indecision, struggled with addiction, and have gone broke on more than one occasion.

Overcoming those obstacles took many years and a lot of hard work.

I read over 500 books.

I attended countless conferences and workshops.

I hired coaches and mentors.

I cut out the negative deadbeats in my life.

I slowly eliminated one bad habit at a time and replaced it with a new one.

What I learned after all that is that Thoreau, Da Vinci and Bruce Lee were right.

Simplicity is the key to health, wealth and happiness.

Learning to apply the 80/20 rule to everything and forgetting the rest.

Because the reality is that most things don’t matter. It’s just noise and meaningless nonsense that distracts us from living the lives we want.

Life is simple really, but we insist on making it complicated.
– Confucius

Jason Khalipa: Mind-Set Tips, Supplementation, Redefining Values | Ep. 135

Oct 4, 2017 50:22

Being an athlete doesn’t stop when you exit the arena, field, or court. Being a competitor is a lifestyle, a lifestyle that Jason Khalipa knows well. As Jason struggled to balance training for the CrossFit Games, fatherhood, fitness entrepreneurship, coaching, and maintaining his business, he soon realized he needed to reevaluate his approach to life.

It is now Jason's approach to life to wholeheartedly focus on the present without fear of reevaluation.

Jason has competed in the CrossFit Games on 8 separate occasions. Competing as an individual for 7 consecutive years, and wrapping up an 8th year as a team competitor, Jason is no rookie to the sport of fitness. Throughout his CrossFit Games career, Jason has only placed outside the Top 10 once, has won every Regional competition he has participated in, and he won the Spirit of the Games award in 2009. Not only has Jason held all podium positions at the world championships, but he was also named to Team USA 3 times.

Bryan Callen: Assume the Position, Benefits of Tragedy, Body Language | Ep. 134

Sep 26, 2017 01:10:51

Born in the Phillipines, Callen spent the first fourteen years of his life overseas in countries like India, Pakistan, Lebanon, Greece and Saudi Arabia, before moving to the U.S. He went to high school in Massachusetts and earned his B.A. in History at the American University in Washington D.C.

Bryan Callen has spent the last 17 years in Los Angeles fighting traffic because that’s where he seems to find the most work. (Bryan Callen is also writing this but making it seem like someone ELSE is writing this by referring to himself in the 3rd person) Callen got his start as an original cast member of MAD TV. He then went on to play numerous roles on the small and big screen including, “Old School” “Bad Santa”, “Sex and the City”, “Entourage,” “Californication”, “7th Heaven,” “King of Queens,” “Stacked,” “Las Vegas,” “West Wing,”“News Radio,” “Significant Others,” “CSI,” “NYPD Blue,”“Suddenly Susan,” and “Frasier.” He recently finished a two season character arc on USA’s“In Plain Sight”

Callen is not a famous actor but sometimes people look at him and scream “Bilson, ” since that’s the character he played on several episodes of CBS’s “How I Met Your Mother.” His most recent TV role was Captain Frank Dashell, leader of the Undead Task Force, in the short lived but critically acclaimed MTV comedy, “Death Valley”. He’s been recognized for that role exactly 4 times but who cares since he’s been recognized over one million times (I’m guessing) as EDDIE, the Middle Eastern owner of a wedding chapel in a little movie called THE HANGOVER. Not to mention his role as Samir, in HANGOVER II where he played basically the same exact character only Samir had thick, curly, hair and darker skin which is actually a good look on Callen considering his Irish/Italian heritage has left him with a ruddy complexion and thinning, mouse-brown hair. His most recent role on the big screen was in the Lion’s Gate drama WARRIOR where he did an excellent job playing himself.

Between acting gigs Callen spends his time power lifting, taming lions, vanquishing evil and making people laugh as a stand up comic. That’s why he can currently be seen on SHOWTIME performing a stand up comedy special called MAN CLASS.

Porangui: Capoeira, Resolving Trauma, Sound Healing | Ep. 132

Sep 12, 2017 01:07:32

“My art is that of holding sacred space. The degree to which I can hold space musically or in silence, on a stage or with a client on the massage table, determines if magic will happen. Whether we are dealing with the space between notes or the space between breaths, the healing power of my work happens when I get out of the way and allow Spirit to move through me.”
- Poranguí

As a live musician, world soul artist and one-man orchestra Poranguí weaves ancestral songs and indigenous rhythms from around the globe. Creating his performances from scratch using looping technology, Poranguí’s live grooves range from meditative to dance party, moving the body, lifting the spirit, and transcending the divide between performer and audience. An evening with Poranguí might take you on a journey from deep, earthy didgeridoo grooves to high-vibe ecstatic Brazilian beats to blissful African kalimba lullabies. Serenades and storytelling to beat boxing and booty shaking: Together, these make an unforgettable experience.

As a DJ, Poranguí performs funky tribal world house sets that integrate live instrumentation, a hybrid of his organic indigenous sound with a potent electronic bed that moves large dance floors. And in sound design and media production roles –  including film soundtrack contributions  – Poranguí’s work is informed by experience with photography and filmmaking.

As a therapeutic bodyworker providing individual sessions in private practice, Poranguí draws on his academic background in neuroscience, his family legacy in the healing arts, and his training as a licensed massage therapist. His “Myorhythmic Release” technique combines the healing properties of sound, movement, and breath, supporting clients from all backgrounds and health conditions in finding freedom from the limitations and suffering of old patterns and trauma.
Poranguí’s integration of these practices – music, healing arts, and arts education – makes him a valued resource for and contributor to retreats, arts centers, school programs, festivals, and special events.

For Poranguí, this rich practice of music, healing, teaching, performance, and creative collaboration represents the intersection of journeys both personal and professional.

“Growing up among such different worlds (cultural, linguistic, spiritual) challenged me as a child. Now I look back and see the blessing it afforded me, to serve as a bridge for others. It taught me to appreciate the salient threads that connect us in our collective human experience. It informs my art and pushes me to find new ways to tell the stories of our ancestors in a way that we can all hear it – in the midst of our contemporary culture.”

WIM HOF: Inner Fire, Reversing Disease, Breathing Deep | Ep. 130

Aug 29, 2017 58:03

Exceptional performance with practicing

Almost two hours in a cylinder filled with 700 kilograms of ice cubes seems like an impossible feat. To climb the highest and coldest mountains in the world, in only shorts, you have to be almost superhuman. And a half marathon barefoot running through snow and ice?! … Yep, it might sound unbelievable, but it’s nothing but true. You know what else? You can do this too! Wim Hof has several breathing exercises and cold-water training that made him able to deliver this performance.

It begins with proper breathing

Wim is able to hold his breath with ease for over six minutes while his entire body is submerged under water. Cold water, obviously. It’s possible for everyone. The base lies in proper breathing.

Through a proper breathing and training it, you can train to hold your breath longer and make conscious contact with your heart, autonomic nervous system, and immune system. It also has a positive influence on your blood circulation.

Next step: Confrontation with the cold

After the breathing and meditation exercises, your body and mind will be prepared for the next challenge: the confrontation with cold. Through certain exposures to the cold, you can make your body stronger. You can start now by practicing this at home! For example, take a cold shower after a hot one. This will train the tiny muscles in your veins to become more flexible. As you progress you can even sit, walk, or run through the snow and ice. More importantly, this helps your body prevent future diseases

Christopher Kelly II: Hormetic Stressors, Psychogeography, Belly Fat | Ep. 129

Aug 18, 2017 01:18:17

My Story

Two years ago I had an awful lot going on. Some of the symptoms listed here I only recognise with hindsight, and many are so common that some people regard them to be normal, I know now that's just not true.

Symptoms Gas, diarrhea, painful bloating, belching Poor cognition Mild depression Caffeine dependency and weird food cravings Chronic fatigue, poor recovery from training Chronic insomnia, tired in the afternoon and wired at night Sugar cravings that persisted after eating sugar Sleepy after eating Non-existent libido Seasonal and cat allergies Extreme sensitivity to bright light Nagging injuries with no known cause Cold during the day, sweating at night

I'm lucky enough to have PPO health insurance provided by my employer, so after an extended period of denial I booked an appointment with my primary care physician. Unfortunately this kind of doctor can only help with symptom relief, and each and every visit ended with the prescription pad. Can't sleep? Take some Ambien. Got allergies? Here's some Allegra. Low iron? Try this supplement. Never once did anyone I visited ever question why I had these problems. The situation came to a head shortly after visiting the gastroenterologist. By this time I’d spent a fortune in deductibles on tests and each time the result would come back with confirmation of what I already knew. It was like I somehow had to prove a point before the doctor would believe me. I drew the line at the colonoscopy, a risky procedure that would almost certainly lead to a prescription for an anti-inflammatory steroids.

The words colonoscopy and steroid had clearly caught the attention of my now wife Julie. The gastroenterologist didn’t really question my diet, and being a food scientist, Julie refused to believe there was no link between my symptoms and diet and set about scouring the literature for a solution. Soon after, and luckily just days before I was to return to the gastroenterologist, she found a body of research that turned out to be life changing. At this point we’d both enjoyed some health improvements through a year of eating a gluten-free Paleo diet but this new body of research, known as the Autoimmune Paleo Protocol, took us to a new level. Within a few weeks I felt so much better, and occult fecal blood and C-reactive protein tests came back normal.

The solution always starts with food, but as it turned out that was only half the solution. Inspired by the huge improvement in way I felt eating AIP I developed a voracious appetite for research. I felt empowered, suddenly I realised that genetics were not the only underlying root cause, and that the answers were really out there waiting to be discovered.

I also make videos. I’m very active on my YouTube channel, where I regularly release videos to help people help themselves. I also make comedy videos known as my 'Ultra Spiritual' series. Aside from the entertainment value of these humorous videos, they also carry important underlying messages (at least I think so, but I’m biased because they’re my videos).

And if the formal credential side of things is important to you, I hold certification as a Holistic Coach Advanced Practitioner through the Holistic Coaching Institute in Columbus, OH. I also served as a faculty member for the C.H.E.K. Institute from 2006-2013. Most importantly, I have red hair, blue eyes, a caring heart, and a warped sense of humor.

Jason Nemer is the co-founder of AcroYoga. He has been blessed to have many great teachers on his path. His family was always very supportive of his many passions. His younger brother brought him into gymnastics and from there he found acrobats playing at the gym and was hooked on both. During his teenage years he trained with some of the top Russian and Bulgarian acrobatic masters. Competing among the best acrobats in the world inspired his practice and taught him about humility.

In 1991, after 4 years of dedicated practice at the age of 16, Jason represented the US at the World Championships of Sports Acrobatics in Beijing. In 1996, he performed acrobatics in the Opening Ceremonies at the Olympic games.
Yoga came to him in his last semester of university in 2001.  After that first class there was no looking back. Connection to the breath and the lifestyle philosophy of yoga filled him with so much joy and new ideas of how to bring his past passions into a new form.
Currently he travels to teach, study and bring communities together. He believes this practice can be used as a tool to heal and connect people in a playful dance that can promote global peace.   http://www.acroyoga.org/teachers/jason-neme

Dr. Andy Galpin: Science & Philosophy of Strength, Fat Burning and Movement | Ep. 112

May 2, 2017 53:30

Dr. Andy Galpin

Director of Education: Andy is a tenured Professor in the Center for Sport Performance at CSU Fullerton.

Needing to know more about muscle, Andy spent 4 years studying the structure and function of human skeletal muscle at the single cell level, a feat which earned him a PhD in Human Bioenergetics in 2011. This also resulted in the friendship with frequent collaborator Dr. Jimmy Bagley and the ability to open up his own "Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Physiology Laboratory" at CSU Fullerton.

Alex Hutchinson: Psychobiology, Breath Hacks, Mammalian Dive Reflex | Ep.111

Apr 25, 2017 01:04:15

I'm a former physicist, a lifelong runner, and (most of all, these days) a science journalist. In the pages of Runner's World, my "Fast Lane" column focuses on training for peak performance -- workouts, racing strategies, and other battle-tested tips to bring down your PRs.

You can read more about my background at my personal website if you're interested. In brief, I started my career as a physicist doing postdoctoral research with the National Security Agency, and competed as a national-class runner for Canada for a decade. In my late 20s, I switched from scientist to science journalist; since then, I've won a National Magazine Award and my writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, Outside, Popular Mechanics (where I'm a contributing editor), Men's Journal, Bicycling, and elsewhere. You can read some examples of my work here.

My latest book is called Which Comes First, Cardio or Weights? Fitness Myths, Training Truths and Other Surprising Discoveries from the Science of Exercise. Yes, it's a mouthful. The premise is pretty simple: it takes 111 common (and uncommon) questions about fitness -- e.g. Should I exercise when I'm sick? And what's the actual difference between running on a treadmill, running on an elliptical trainer, and running outside? -- and digs up the current state of peer-reviewed knowledge. It's not a textbook: the aim is to make the research accessible to anyone who's interested, from total exercise beginners to competitive athletes.

Ryan Munsey: Lucid Dreaming, Nootropics, Cheat Days | Ep. 104

Mar 7, 2017 01:00:31

About Ryan Munsey about_rm_pg

You can do anything. You’re capable of more. Unleash your potential. Maximize your potential

For most people in the world today, its like we’re living in this shadow life where we are are afraid to step out in the light and afraid to live to our fullest potential. We live small, we play small, we hide who we truly are for fear of being ostracized or labeled as different if we stray from the status quo or reveal our true self.

I SAY SCREW THAT! (Imagine punk hair cut, Rage Against the Machine music and ostentatious Ray-Bans. Or I could just insert a picture for you…)

TO ME, this whole fitness, nutrition, “bio-hacking” movement is a vessel that we can utilize to help us move towards the “MORE” that we are chasing…

We have found that we can manipulate our habits and our actions to get more muscle or lose more fat, get better sleep, have more sex, make more money, and we can be smarter, increase focus, we can be more productive, we can improve our lives and move our reality closer to the dream life that we have for ourselves.

That’s what this page is all about! Yes we can manipulate calories and control insulin so that you can lose body fat. Yes we can program the perfect sets and reps to help you achieve whatever fitness or strength and conditioning goal you might have, but it’s more than that – It’s about what those things do for the rest of your life.

Jack Kruse II: Hacking Stiff Joints, Fat & Entrainment | Ep 103

Feb 27, 2017 01:06:26

About Dr. Jack Kruse

Dr. Jack Kruse is a respected neurosurgeon and CEO of Optimized Life, a health and wellness company dedicated to helping patients avoid the healthcare burdens we typically encounter as we age. He is currently in private practice in the Gulf South.

As a neurosurgeon, Dr. Kruse’s research has been published in respected dental and medical journals. His popular blog, www.JackKruse.com, gets over 250,000 unique worldwide visitors per month from countries like Australia, Germany, Russia, and Zambia (Africa).

The Great Diet Deception: How US Politics Have Duped the World

A neurosurgeon’s journey into America’s obesity and disease epidemic

In the 1970s, wheat and high fructose corn syrup became staples in the American diet after significant backlash from the American people over inflation and soaring food prices. Nixon and his cabinet committed to reshaping the nutritional landscape so that high food prices would never be an issue in American politics again, and the US food pyramid was born.

Today, in the face of rampant heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and autoimmune diseases like celiac disease, multiple sclerosis and thyroiditis, we have learned that America’s health crisis began with a political move made nearly forty years ago by elected officials who didn’t want to deal with the fallout of inflation. Some of our most popular beliefs about good health are, in fact, lies that were sold to the American people as propaganda.

In 2007, New York native Dr. Jack Kruse, then a Nashville-based neurosurgeon, suffered a torn meniscus in his knee at 6’2”, 357 lbs. Ashamed and frustrated that he’d let his health spin out of control, Dr. Kruse knew his life had to change. He devoured anything he could find on obesity and disease, reading between 5 and 6,000 articles over 18 months, uncovering research on the new science of leptin receptor biology and the dietary lies and propaganda of the USDA, agra-food complex, and the pharmaceutical complex. Dr. Kruse realized he was dying from the same epidemic that now plagues 150 million Americans and billions worldwide as the Standard American Diet is imported to the rest of the developing world. Leveraging leptin’s cutting-edge science and using evolutionary biology as the beacons for optimal health, Dr. Kruse lost 77 lbs in three months and 133 lbs in a year.

His most startling discovery defies everything modern medicine believes about health, weight-loss, and managing disease: obesity is not the result of too many calories, not enough exercise or living a slothful existence. Obesity is an inflammatory brain condition that is completely reversible. His bio hack showed him that obesity is a thermodynamic problem causing us to lose energy to our environment and not a state of energy excess that people believe.  He leveraged his findings to help patients in his private practice lose weight and reverse major diseases like osteoporosis, diabetes, and sleep apnea. He eventually developed his “Leptin Rx Reset,” a protocol that acts as a brain surgery without ever using a blade, completely rewiring the hypothalamus by aligning with our natural circadian rhythms and mastering the “timing” of our evolutionary blueprint. His findings include:

The timing of when you eat is more important than what you eat, Snacking or eating “small meals” every 2-3 hours as commonly advocated by conventional medicine all but guarantees life-long obesity, Anyone can lose massive amounts of weight without ever counting a calorie, Rigorous cardio exercises (like long distance running or chronic cardio routines) leads to stem cell reduction and shaves years off the end of your life, and Eating fats conventional medicine told us to shun is ideal for Optimal Health.

In June of 2011, Dr. Kruse began blogging about his findings, and people all over the world began to marry the Leptin Rx to an ancestral diet (known as the Epi Paleo Rx template with incredible results, chronicled in forums all over the internet. One such thread on a popular paleo diet forum has logged over 1.5 million hits in just over a year. Dr. Kruse is on a mission to reshape healthcare in America by educating the masses and their doctors on what it looks like to achieve optimal health and reverse chronic disease.

Dr. Jack Kruse is a respected neurosurgeon and CEO of Optimized Life, a health and wellness company dedicated to helping patients avoid the healthcare burdens we typically encounter as we age. He resides in Gulf South close to New Orleans with his family.

Does this sound familiar? ‘No matter how much I exercise and how ‘healthily” I eat, I can’t seem to keep the weight off or my cholesterol’s too high or my arthritis/allergies are giving me trouble or my knees/back hurts or I have sleep apnea….” I hear this over and over again and I KNOW it doesn’t have to be this way. There is a solution, they just don’t want you to know it. That, ladies & gentlemen, is why I’m angry.

Mark Sisson: Primal Blueprint, DMT, Building an Empire | Ep. 96

Jan 10, 2017 51:18

So, tell us about the guy behind Mark’s Daily Apple!

I’m a former elite endurance athlete who has made health and fitness my life’s work. In my younger days, I was on the track toward medical school for a while (BA in Biology from Williams College), but I got detoured by a different track—literally—and a dream of making the US Olympic team for the marathon. As the decades passed, I realized that my calling was as an independent researcher, critical thinker, motivator, and communicator—to get people to take responsibility for their health and fitness (often in the face of flawed conventional wisdom that can lead even the best-intentioned astray), and to inspire people to be open-minded, passionate, and enthusiastic about leading a healthy, happy, fit, balanced, active lifestyle, with the least amount of pain, suffering and sacrifice possible.

Dec 20, 2016 54:03

Soon thereafter in 2008, he launched his first podcast Underground Wellness Radio, on which he interviewed authors and experts in the alternative health space. The program ran for 7 years with over 10 million downloads and 348 episodes about all things real food and functional medicine with a sprinkle of personal development on the side.

During his seven years with Underground Wellness (UW), Sean penned his still-popular Dark Side of Fat Loss ebook, started the JERF (Just Eat Real Food) movement, and hosted seven online summit events, including The Thyroid Sessions, Digestion Sessions, and The Depression Sessions.

In late 2015, Sean walked away from his thriving UW brand to create a new movement in the world of personal development and the science of mind. The nerd in him couldn’t stop wondering what makes people do what they do and not do the things they really want to do.

Mark Bell: Bigger, Stronger, Faster, Psychology of Strongmen | Ep. 92

Dec 13, 2016 01:04:35

I used to be known as JackAss from my days at elitefts.com, or Smelly from the feature film documentary "Bigger, Stronger, Faster." I am now the strongest strength coach in the world (maybe someone can dispute this fact, but I don't know who). I'm a husband, a father of two, an editor for Power Magazine (www.ThePowerMagazine.com), an inventor of the Sling Shot (www.HowMuchYaBench.net) and the owner of "The Strongest Gym In The West," Super Training, in Sacramento, CA. It was voted by Men's Health as one of the top 30 gyms in the country. I coach a team of 20 highly competitive powerlifters. We work hard, but we have tons of fun. The fun and intensity of the gym can be seen on our website, www.SuperTraining.Tv. I have also established the wildly popular "Power Project Q and A," which now has over 2 million views. You can check that out at www.YouTube.com/SuperTraining06.

I am a World and American record holding pro powerlifter. I've squatted 1,080 lbs, benched 854 lbs, and deadlifted 766 lbs. My 2,628 lb total is the highest in California history. I'm currently ranked in the top 10 of all-time at 275 and 308.

Christopher Kelly: Sleep Support, Libido, Blood Testing | Ep 83

Oct 11, 2016 59:05

I'm Christopher Kelly, and I figured out the solution the hard way so you don't have to...

I love cycling – training, competing, the whole thing. I love the buzz a great workout session gives me...

But with hindsight, I realize I've spent most of my life feeling like crap.

Sure, I was fast, but the biomarkers spelled impending doom. I struggled with insomnia, fatigue, brain fog... my libido plummeted and my recovery times took a nose-dive. I wanted to train well, but I also wanted to enjoy the rest of my life!

So I transitioned to a Paleo-type diet, reading a book a week on the subject for a year – but that was only half the solution...

The other half came through experimenting with and perfecting a system of functional medicine – I became my own guinea pig!

Now, my body’s back in balance – my symptoms have disappeared, my diet’s right for me, and my family life is as enjoyable as my training.

David Epstein: Tribal Athleticism, Movement Generalism, Creativity | Ep. 79

Sep 13, 2016 56:45

David Epstein writes about the developing science around sport -- from performance-enhancing drugs to the lucky genetics that separate a professional athlete from a duffer. A science writer and longtime contributor to Sports Illustrated, he's helped break stories on steroids in baseball, fraudulently marketed health remedies, and big-money irregularities in "amateur" college football. In 2007, inspired by the death of a childhood friend, he wrote a moving exploration of the most common cause of sudden death in young athletes, a hard-to-diagnose heart irregularity known as HCM.

Now an investigative reporter at ProPublica, Epstein is the author of The Sports Gene, a book that explores the complex factors that make up a championship athlete. Is there such a thing as natural greatness, or can even extreme skills -- like the freaky-fast reaction of a hockey great -- be learned? Conversely, is the desire and will to master extreme skills something you're born with?
