INDEPENDENCE ROCK

Jun 3, 2018 06:59

Description:

Over half a million American emigrants passed by Independence Rock in Wyoming, on the way to Oregon and hopefully a better life than the one they had left.  Many stopped to paint or chisel their names on the long granite hill, leaving their mark behind for others to find. If they made Independence Rock by July 4th, they knew they could make it to Oregon or California before the winter snows. They often stopped to celebrate July 4th, Independence Day- a day that meant a lot to them as people free to live and worship as they pleased in a country with no limits on what they could accomplish.

I WILL FIGHT NO MORE FOREVER (PT III): A BITTER SURRENDER

Apr 6, 2018 27:39

Description:

"I Will Fight No More Forever (Pt 3): A Bitter Surrender, the conclusion of our three part series on the last fight of Chief Joseph and his Nez Perce tribe as they finally surrender to General Miles just before making it to the Canadian border. It is a sad story of mistreatment of the American Indian, made all the more poignant by the fact that this had been a peaceful tribe displaced by greed. Also disappointing was the refusal of the Crow tribe and the Sioux tribe to come to the aid of the Nez Perce.

REMEMBERING THE BLUES BROTHERS

Apr 2, 2018 12:34

Description:

REMEMBERING THE BLUES BROTHERS: On April 22,1978, Saturday Night Live's Paul Schaffer announced an R&B act featuring two unknown blues artists, Joliet Jake E.Blues and Elwood J Blues- who went by the name The Blues Brothers. When the live audience saw them run out to the stage, they instantly recognized Dan Akroyd and John Belushi, and for one short moment the crowd, and millions of tv viewers, thought that a comedy act was going to follow. But their driving performance of "Hey, Bartender", with a first class band behind them, left no doubt that The Blues Brothers was here for good. It was a big moment in their careers, and for all those who witnessed that performance and the many to come, it was America's Best of Times.

"I Will Fight No More Forever" were the words Nez Perce Indian Chief Joseph spoke when surrendering his tribe to Colonel Miles at the end of a long and arduous trail of pitched battles through extremely rough country with the US Cavalry in an attempt to escape to Canada after the US Government forced the tribe to leave their homeland.

The Nez Perce War was an armed conflict that pitted several bands of the Nez Perce tribe of Native Americans and their allies, a small band of the Palouse tribe led by Red Echo (Hahtalekin, famous for their Appaloosa horses, and Bald Head (Husishusis Kute), against the United States Army.

The conflict, fought between June and October 1877, stemmed from the refusal of several bands of the Nez Perce, dubbed "non-treaty Indians," to give up their ancestral lands in the Pacific Northwest and move to an Indian reservation in Idaho. This forced removal was in violation of the 1855 Treaty of Walla Walla, which granted the tribe 7.5 million acres in their ancestral lands and the right to hunt and fish in lands ceded to the government. After the first armed engagements in June, the Nez Perce embarked on an arduous trek north initially to seek help with the Crow tribe. After the Crows' refusal of aid, they sought sanctuary with the Lakota led by Sitting Bull, who had fled to Canada in May 1877 to avoid capture following the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn. The Nez Perce were pursued by elements of the U.S. Army with whom they fought a series of battles and skirmishes on a fighting retreat of 1,170 miles (1,880 km).

In Part Two, we'll cover the events that took place when the escaping Indians entered Yellowstone National Park, coming in contact with campers and tourists in the path of their desperate escape.

In Part Three the war heads toward a bitter and cold end after a final five-day battle fought alongside Snake Creek at the base of Montana's Bears Paw Mountains only 40 miles (64 km) from the Canada–US border. A big majority of the surviving Nez Perce represented by Chief Joseph of the Wallowa band of Nez Perce, surrendered to Brigadier Generals Oliver Otis Howard and Nelson A. Miles.[4] White Bird, of the Lamátta band of Nez Perce, managed to elude the Army after the battle and escape with an undetermined number of his band to Sitting Bull's camp in Canada. The 418 Nez Perce who surrendered, including women and children, were taken prisoner and sent by train to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

UNSUNG HEROES OF THE REVOLUTION (PT I): WASHINGTON'S SPIES

Feb 16, 2018 54:05

Description:

Unsung Heroes of the Revolution (Pt. 1): The Culper Spy Ring, Nathan Hale, Caleb Brewster, James Rivington, and others...Few people leaving the Banana Republic Store at 66th and 3rd st Manhattan, NY, stop to notice the plaque on the outside wall that mentions the spot less than 100 yards away where courageous young Nathan Hale spoke his famous last words “I regret that have but one life to give for my country’- before being hung from a tree by his British captors. And many probably have no idea how and why those words stirred General Washington’s heart so profoundly when he heard them. And Lady Gaga probably had no idea that her Rivington Street Rebels derived their name from Washington’s greatest spy- James Rivington- or the Beastie Boys, for that matter, when they chose a picture of Manhattan’s Rivington Street for the cover of their album ,Paul’s Boutique. Or the people leaving the Burger King at the intersection of Gregory Ave. and River Dr. in Passaic NJ who drop trash near the forlorn historical marker located on a small concrete pad right there near a utility pole in the parking lot…the sign that just begins to note the incredible accomplishments of a one-time British Lord, William Alexander –better known , and loved, by his Continental Troops as Lord Sterling. Although it says much more, these few words say it all: “American Patriot, Friend of George Washington”. The American Revolution stretched for eight years, from 1775 to 1783, during which time Commander in Chief George Washington had to depend on his network of spies and most trusted soldiers to stay one step ahead of the noose. The AMC series TURN, based on Alexander Rose's book "Washington's Spies", gives a highly fictionalized account of the actions of Washington's greatest spy ring- The Culper Ring. This is the real story of the courageous men and women who risked and sometimes suffered hanging, beginning with Nathan Hale. While Part I focusses mainly on the Culper Spy Ring,, Part Two will provide many rarely told stories about the unsung heroes who risked everything for the cause of liberty, including the slave spy James Armistead Lafayette, Margaret Corbin, Molly Pitcher, Francis Marion , aka The Swamp Fox, and many others. THE CALL OF THE WILD (CHAPTER 1) by JACK LONDON

Nov 15, 2017 26:16

Description:

THE CALL OF THE WILD (CHAPTER ONE) #JackLondon #thecallofthewild This Jack London classic tells the story of a dog named Buck who is kidnapped from his home in California and sold as a potential sled dog to Alaskan mail packers. In this opening chapter, Buck is beaten mercilessly by one of his handlers, making this chapter unsuitable for young children, and rough on adults as well, but it is important to the story and to Buck's metamorphasis from a gentle family dog to a creature of the wild. He is bought by an Alaskan mail carrier and learns to work on a sled team of nine dogs, learning how to survive both the dogs and the harsh environment. London is an expert at attaching human qualities to the dogs, showing them to be equally brutal as some humans, and painting a picture of the beautiful but deadly Alaskan landscape. Ever wonder why some pet dogs "make a nest" before they retire for sleep? That goes back to prehistoric times, and you'll discover the answer within the first three chapters. Buck, later in the story, finally escapes and survives in the wild until he is rescued by a kind man, who becomes his friend. It is an incredible story, told from Buck's point of view.

Jul 24, 2017 17:04

Description:

THE PIED PIPER: THE REAL STORY...The old fairy tale "The Pied Piper" of Hamlin is a tale as old as time, telling of the tragic loss of 130 children who followed a colorfully-dressed piperman out of town and into the nearby hills, never to be seen again. As it turns out, the story was true, but the "hows" and the "whys" are still being explored today. We share a few theories today about what really happened in the little village of Hamlin, German in 1284. Music: Medievil Music Royalty Free by Darren Curtis

We share a few theories today about what really happened in the little village of Hamlin, German in 1284. Music: Medievil Music Royalty Free by Darren Curtis

HANG DOWN YOUR HEAD TOM DOOLEY: THE SONG STORY: On May 1, 1868, they took Tom Dula down to the old depot in Statesville and hung him from a white oak tree for the murder of Laura Foster, Legend has it that while waiting in prison he came up with the basic chorus to the folk song that we know today as "Hang Down Your Head, Tom Dooley". AMAZING GRACE

I once was lost, but now I am found, Was blind, but now I see. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come, 'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far And grace will lead me home. The Lord has promised good to me His word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures. Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal life shall cease I shall possess within the veil, A life of joy and peace. When we've been there ten thousand years Bright shining as the sun, We've no less days to sing God's praise Than when we've first begun.

FREEDOM WINS ONE IN TROY, N.Y.

Apr 21, 2017 13:02

Description:

Freedom Wins One in Troy- A little NY town provides safety for a runaway slave. On April 27th, 1850, the Vigilante Committee in Troy, New York, prevented a Sheriff and a Slave Catcher from extraditing one of their own, a runaway slave named Charles Nalle, who had made his escape north in 1848 through the Underground Railway to what he hoped was freedom and the chance for a new life. Blacks and whites combined in a number of dangerous efforts to free Nalle that day, and they succeeded in doing so, scoring one small step for freedom in a turbulent time for America. The citizens of Troy later raised today's equivalent of $14,000 to buy Nalle's freedom.
